Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD. July 30th 2015)--- Southern Maryland came into play tonight having lost four of their last five, but tonight were able to salvage the series winning 5-3 on Jovan Rosa's walk-off homerun.
The Revolution scored first in the top of the second on a Salvador Paniagua double to make it 1-0. Southern Maryland countered in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game on a Jake Opitz RBI double to right center to make it 1-1.
Southern Maryland took the lead for the first time in the game in the bottom of the sixth. Shortstop Casey Frawley stepped to the dish and blasted his fifth homerun, and first at Regency Furniture Stadium in 2015 over the wall in left center to make it 2-1. In the top of the seventh, York loaded the bases with Orlando Santos on the mound, and Wilson Valdez at the plate. Orlando blew a fastball by the bat of Valdez for the strikeout, leaving the bases loaded.
In need of the insurance run, Southern Maryland added another run on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Grant Zawadzki came to the plate and singled to left center. The next hitter Jamar Walton ripped a triple past the diving first baseman Telvin Nash and into the right field corner to score Zawadzki all the way from first to make it 3-1 Southern Maryland.
In the top of the ninth, Erik Hamren came on for the save, and he struck out the first two hitters. Salvador Paniagua reached with a base hit to left center to keep the game alive. The number nine hitter James Simmons was the next up, and he got a pitch to hit and hit a bomb over the wall in left center to tie the game at five. It was the third blown save by Hamren this season.
The Blue Crabs though ended things in the bottom of the ninth. After a Grant Zawadzki single, Jovan Rosa came to the plate, and blasted a homerun over the wall in left to walk it off and win it for the Blue Crabs. It was the sixth walk-off win for Southern Maryland this season, and the first via the homerun.
Neither pitcher factored in the decision. RHP Brian Grening went six innings, allowing a run on five hits, and striking out four for the Blue Crabs. Meanwhile, the 6-7 right hander Matt Neil threw six strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits, and striking out four. In fact, Neil retired the first nine Blue Crabs hitters he faced in the game.
The seven game homestand continues for Southern Maryland, as they take on the Sugar Land Skeeters in game one of a four game series tomorrow evening at Regency Furniture Stadium. The first pitch is set for 7:05 P.M.
