Roots Concede Late and Settle for a Draw
October 3, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Oakland Roots News Release
In front of just over 5,000 faithful at Laney College, the Roots battled the Lights to a draw on Saturday night amidst their playoff hunt effort. The Lights drew first blood early when Julian Vazquez got behind Oakland's back line and crossed it into Daniel Trejo who bundled it home in the fifth minute, but the Roots responded well with a penalty kick opportunity 10 minutes later. Quincy Amarikwa was unable to beat Lights goalkeeper Alex Rando from the spot, but he wasn't fazed, scoring just eight minutes later with an exquisite diving header. Tied at one apiece, the Roots began to control the tempo of the match and were rewarded with a Lights own goal after a dangerous cross into the box in the 28th minute, giving the Roots the lead.
The second half was a seesaw affair as the Lights sought an equalizer and the Roots pushed to score. Momentum shifted in the Roots' favor in the 73rd minute when the Lights went down to ten men after a nasty foul on Memo Diaz, but they were unable to take advantage. It was Las Vegas that stole the show late when captain CC Uche buried a left-footed volley to salvage a point for the Lights and deal the Roots a blow in their playoff push effort.
The Roots look to bounce back on Wednesday at Laney College against Sacramento Republic in what will be a pivotal Norcal derby.
