Richmond Roosters News Release
Kalamazoo, Michigan - Offense continued to be the storyline for Richmond in the 13-8 win over Kalamazoo on Friday night. Runs were plentiful for the both the Roosters and the Kings in the slugfest, trading big innings late in the game, but Richmond managed to quiet Kalamazoo in the ninth for the win.
The Roosters jumped on Kalamazoo starter Jeff Garner immediately with four runs in the first inning. Mike Reese came home on a RBI single from Hector Urena to plate the first run of the game. Two more scored on Josh Hollingsworth's league leading ninth home run of the year to give Richmond a 3-0 lead. Tony Sanguinetti singled and stole second in the next at-bat, then scored on a single by O.J. Garza to give the Roosters a 4-0 lead after half an inning. The Kings got a run back in their half of the first inning. Leadoff hitter, Darryl Blaze, was hit by a pitch then advanced to third on two wild pitches by Jared Howton and later scored on an RBI double by Tim Brown. The Roosters got that run back in the third however when Sanguinetti scored on a fielder's choice hit by Garza. Sanguinetti scored his third run of the night in the fifth on a solo homer that gave Richmond a 6-1 lead. Mike Reese added another run in the sixth with his first home run of the season.
Similar to Richmond's seven run rally against Rockford on Thursday, the Kings scored eight runs in the seventh to take a 9-7 lead. Two singles, two doubles and a grand slam by Tim Brown contributed to the scoring spree in an inning that saw 12 batters come to the plate for Kalamazoo. Richmond would not be denied however as they continued to chip away at the lead. The Roosters managed only one run in eighth but five runs crossed the plate in the last inning to give the them a 13-9 lead and eventually the win. Mike Reese and Kevin White got hits that scored two RBI each in the inning to help power the team to its first win in four games. Adam Varteressian earned the win for Richmond while Dan Caldwell pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
Richmond has two games left in Kalamazoo. Tony Casoli (2-1, 3.38 ERA) will make the start for Richmond on Saturday in an attempt to start a winning streak. The Kings will send Jonathon Gutierrez (2-2, 4.68 ERA) to the mound. Game time is set for 5:35pm (Indiana time) at Homer Stryker Field.
