ROCKFORD, Ill. - Joe Barbosa pitched decisively Saturday to earn his first win.
Barbosa ended a season-opening string of four no-decisions with a four-hit shutout as the Rockford RiverHawks beat Washington, 3-0.
Barbosa (1-0) retired the first seven of the game and got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the third inning on a pair of groundouts. Barbosa stretched that into a streak of 10 in a row retired. He finished with four strikeouts and allowed three Wild Things to reach scoring position.
Barbosa wrapped up the win in 1:56, the quickest game of the season, in front of 3,293 at Marinelli Field.
Washington starter Aaron Gangi gave up two unearned runs on three hits over seven innings and took the loss. Gangi (2-1) kept the game scoreless into the fifth inning, when the RiverHawks put two on with one out. He attempted to pick off the rear runner, though first baseman Andy Hudak was not covering. Gangi's error allowed Ryan Larson to score from second base.
The RiverHawks added runs in the seventh and eighth innings. They matched a season low with four base hits.
The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
