Roosters Get Offensive in Kalamazoo

Richmond Roosters News Release

KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN – Much of the Richmond Roosters’ early success this season can be credited to outstanding pitching that has earned the pitching staff the lead in the Frontier league for ERA, but this year’s fourth of July weekend saw the team’s offense dominate the games as the team won two out of three games while visiting the Kalamazoo Kings.

The Roosters dropped the first game of the series Thursday night when the Kings scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to break up a scoreless tie. Steve Strohm turned in an impressive start for the Roosters by pitching five and two-thirds scoreless innings. Drew Miller recorded four hits in as many at-bats, but the Roosters were unable to push a run across the plate.

The offense more than made up for the lack of runs on Thursday as they collected a season high fifteen hits en route to a 6-5 victory on Friday. The Roosters took the lead for good in the 7th inning on seven hits, two walks, two wild pitches, four runs and RBI hits by Jeremiah Klosterman and Josh Hollingsworth. Jake Gann (3-0) gets the win in relief and Vince Vazquez picks up his fifth save, putting them down 1-2-3 in the ninth.

The Roosters continued to pound the ball Saturday as the team scored a season high thirteen runs. Tom Pearce turned in his most impressive offensive performance of the season by clubbing two home runs while collecting five RBI. With the win, the Roosters improved their record to 3-3 on the road trip.

The Roosters conclude their road trip with a three game series in Chillicothe scheduled to start Sunday afternoon. The Roosters return to McBride Stadium on Wednesday, July 9, for a three game series with the division leading Evansville Otters.
