Richmond Roosters News Release

Lorain, Ohio – The Roosters scored four runs in the second inning Wednesday night, but were shutout the rest of the game and lost 9-4 to Ohio Valley. Mike White made his second start of the season and continued to struggle in that role for the Roosters. Jason Boyd hit two 3-run homers off White, one in the first and one in the third, to give the Redcoats six early runs. White pitched 4-1/3 innings and gave up nine runs, six earned, to Ohio Valley batters.

Redcoats starting pitcher, Eric Holt, struggled with his control from the beginning. He pitched only three innings before being pulled after he walked three batters, hit another, and gave up all four of Richmond runs. The bullpen was more than capable, however, as they shutout the Roosters over the final six innings.

The Roosters plated four in the second inning by taking advantage of timely hits and mistakes by Ohio Valley. Alex Rybczack was hit by a pitch and Joe Rhomberg singled to put two on base. Mike Reese then singled to drive in Rybczack and Kevin White doubled in the next at-bat to score Rhomberg and put runners at second and third. The Redcoats' catcher then tried to pick off Reese at third base and threw the ball down the left field line that allowed both Reese and White to score and give the Roosters a brief 4-3 lead after 2-½ innings.

Trouble continued for Mike White in the bottom of the third when Boyd hit his second three run homer of the night to give Ohio Valley a 6-4 lead. The Redcoats got three more runs in the fifth off an error and a 2 RBI single that resulted in a 9-4 score. Roosters Manager Chris Mongiardo was ejected in the fifth inning after complaining about several non-strike calls on White's pitches.

Derek Bennett and Brian Chapman made relief appearances for the Roosters and pitched 3- 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. Richmond attempted to rally several times throughout the ballgame, but couldn't push any more runs across as the score remained 9-4. White (0-2) took the loss and Blair Lang (1-0) got the win for Ohio Valley.

This is the fourth of a 15-game road trip for the Roosters (2-5). Two more games remain against Ohio Valley (3-4) before heading to Chillicothe for a 3-game series against the Paints.
