Richmond Roosters News Release
Kalamazoo, Michigan - The Roosters produced a season high of sixteen hits as they marched to a 9-3 win over the Kalamazoo Kings on Sunday. The win for Richmond was the first in six tries over the Kings at Home Stryker Field in Kalamazoo. The Roosters managed to avoid a three game sweep and now focus on the beginning of interdivisional play after a day off.
The Roosters scored first in all three games in the Kalamazoo series. Richmond led 1-0 on Friday and 2-0 on Saturday, but could not make a lead hold up until the offense scored the first nine runs of the game on Sunday. A four run first set the tone for the Roosters as Drew Miller began the game with a double and Josh Hollingsworth reached base on a fielder's choice. Trevor Hall would drive in both runners on a double, which was immediately followed by a Blake Woods two run homer. It was Woods first home run of the season after just joining the club on Friday from the Windy City Thunderbolts.
Richmond made the lead 5-0 on an Eddie Romprey run in the second and then Trevor Hall Struck again in the fifth. Hall's leadoff shot to left field easily cleared the outfield porch area and soared into the trees behind the outfield wall. Hall's blast was followed by a Kevin Brown single and he was plated on an RBI single from Tony Sanguinetti. Sanguinetti finish the day 4 for 5 with four singles and one RBI. Leading 7-0, the Roosters scored once in the seventh and once in the eighth to take a 9-0 advantage.
Curt Moenter (1-2) struggled with his control in the early innings, but never more than one hit five innings of work. He fought out of jams in the first three innings and then struck out six of the last nine batters he faced, including three straight with runners on base to end the third. John Pettibone, Dan Caldwell, and Chad Sosebee combined for three shut out innings of relief and Matt Schweitzer pitched the ninth, allowing the three Kings runs before ending the game.
The Kings (17-13) pitching struggled for the first time in six games against Richmond as starter David McWatters (1-4) went 4 1/4 innings and allowed seven runs and ten hits. Kalamazoo used five pitchers on the day, the most in any game against the Roosters.
The Roosters (10-19) will have a scheduled off day on Monday before retuning to action with a clash against the Rockford Riverhawks of the Frontier League Western Division. The three games in Rockford are half of the interdivisional schedule this season with Rockford playing in Richmond on August 4th, 5th, and 6th. The Riverhawks are the only Western Division team that the Roosters will face in the 2004 season. Doug Heagan (0-0, 13.50 ERA) will make another start for Richmond and will face Rockford's Adam Palmer (0-3, 3.57 ERA). Tuesday's game time is set for 7:05pm (Indiana Time) in Rockford.
