Rookie Defenseman Clint Lewis Joins Steelheads
September 4, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - Steelheads Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Neil Graham announced on Tuesday that the Idaho Steelheads have agreed to terms with rookie defenseman Clint Lewis on an ECHL contract for the 2018-19 season.
Lewis, 23, starts his professional career after three seasons with Minnesota State University Mankato. The Burnsville, Minnesota native recorded seven assists, 22 penalty minutes, and a plus-19 rating in 37 games last year during his senior season with the Mavericks.
"Clint is a big defender who is going to make an immediate impact on our back end," said Graham. "He has good mobility in his game and we're excited to add him to our defense corps."
The 6-foot-2 defenseman played 82 games with the Mavericks from 2015 to 2018, totaling three goals and 23 points with 85 penalty minutes and a plus-29 rating. He also spent the 2013-14 season at Cornell University, where he had a goal, two points, and 20 penalty minutes in 32 games.
"I'm thrilled to be a part of the Steelheads organization and their winning culture," said Lewis. "My ability to play hard in the defensive zone while breaking pucks out and chipping in offensively will contribute to their success. I'm eager to bring those attributes to Idaho and to get the season started."
Lewis left Cornell after one season and went to the USHL for the 2014-15 campaign, collecting four goals, 15 points, and 83 penalty minutes in 52 games for the Sioux City Musketeers. An alumnus of the US National Development Program, Lewis also played in the USHL from 2011 to 2013.
In international competition for the US National Development Program, Lewis won a silver medal at the 2012 U-17 World Hockey Championships and a silver medal at the 2013 U-18 World Junior Championships.
Lewis becomes the fifth defenseman, and third rookie blue-liner, announced by the Steelheads this off-season.
