Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Florida Marlins have chosen Ron Hassey to manage the Albuquerque Isotopes for the 2005 season. Hassey, in his first managerial job, spent the 2004 season as the skipper of the Marlins' Double-A affiliate in Carolina, leading the Mudcats to a 73-66 record in the Southern League's East Division. Hassey took over as the Mudcats' manager when Tracy Woodson was promoted to helm the Isotopes in 2004.
Hassey, 51, spent 14 seasons in the majors as a catcher, playing from 1978-1991. Hassey played for Cleveland, Chicago (NL), New York (AL), Chicago (AL), Oakland and Montreal and finished his career with a .266 batting average in 1,192 games. Hassey also has the distinction of being behind the plate for two perfect games, having caught Len Barker's in 1981 while with the Indians and Dennis Martinez's in 1991 while with the Expos.
Hassey joined the New York Yankees in 1992 as an advance scout before joining the then-expansion Colorado Rockies coaching staff in 1993. He spent three years in Colorado before becoming the bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1996. He then joined the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1997, spending seven seasons with the organization performing various duties prior to being named manager of the Carolina Mudcats.
Hassey is the third Manager in three years for the Isotopes, following Dean Treanor and Woodson.
