Romero Twirls Gem as Crushers Beat Wild Things

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, used another big inning on Saturday night to defeat the Washington Wild Things 6-2. With the win, the Crushers also clinched the series and moved to within 1.5 games of first place.

Lake Erie had scoring opportunities in the first three innings against Washington ace Thomas Dorminy but were unable to score. In the fourth inning, they finally cashed in.

With two men on base, Bryan DeLaRosa reached on an error to load the bases. Tyler Cowles followed with an RBI single and the Crushers led 1-0. Later in the inning, Aaron Hill made it 3-0 with a two run double and Kewby Meyer followed with a two run single. For the second straight night, the Crushers sent nine men to the plate in an inning and they led 5-0 after four innings.

Dorminy (7-3) went just five innings while allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits.

Crushers starter Alex Romero allowed a couple of hits in the second inning but after that he settled in. Romero retired 10 in order before allowing a walk in the seventh inning. With one out in the inning, Mike Hill hit his 11th home run of the season, making it 5-2.

Washington put the tying run at the plate later in the inning but Romero struck out James Harris to end the inning. Romero (5-4) finished with seven inning while striking out a season-high 10 batters.

Lake Erie got a run back in the eighth when Hill homered for the first time of the season. Hill went 4-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs in the win.

Seth Lucio and Logan Lombana threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to secure the 6-2 win. Lake Erie improved to 28-24 on the year while Washington fell to 30-23.

The Crushers will go for the sweep tomorrow when Micah Beyer (0-0, 0.00 ERA) faces Chase Cunningham (3-3, 5.92 ERA).
