Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa-Hockey is a game of inches and only seconds after Dubuque's Peter Quenneville rang the post on an opportunity to give the Fighting Saints its first lead of the night, Youngstown's Sam Anas rushed the puck the other way and scored. His goal at 11:54 of the third period gave the Youngstown Phantoms a 4-3 win Thursday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Dubuque outshot Youngstown 38-19, but Youngstown goalie Sean Romeo kicked aside 35 shots to earn the victory.
Youngstown only fired four shots on goal in the game's first period, but the Phantoms started the scoring. Cam Brown tallied shorthanded only 2:57 into the game to make it 1-0 Youngstown. With teammate James Mazza in the box, Austin Cangelosi setup Brown in the high slot on a rush, and he wristed a shot past Dubuque goaltender Arthur Brey for his 10th goal of the year. With the game tied 1-1 after a Mike Szmatula goal, Youngstown scored again at 17:54 as Kyle Connor struck from the left wing. Connor raced into the Fighting Saints zone and Matt Benning pushed him wide, but Connor's shot low along the ice slide through Brey's five-hole to make it 2-1 Phantoms on only their fourth shot of the game. After the goal, Christian Frey would replace Brey between the pipes. Despite allowing 17 shots, the Phantoms held a 2-1 lead going into the second frame.
Dubuque continued to pepper Romeo and the dam finally broke after the Phantom's iced the puck and had tired personnel for a defensive zone faceoff. Off the draw, a Dubuque shot from the blueline was tipped by captain Shane Sooth, and Jarrid Privitera pounced on the rebound and beat Romeo along the ice from an odd-angle for his 12th goal of the season at 9:04 to make it 2-2.
The two teams would trade goals later in the second period. Austin Cangelosi notched his third point of the game on a goal at 15:03. On a give-and-go with Connor, Cangelosi rocketed a shot over Frey's glove for his 15th goal of the season from the low slot to make it 3-2 Phantoms. Dubuque would respond with a big goal late in the second as Szmatula struck for his second of the game with only 32 seconds on the clock. Karson Kuhlman collected his second assist of the game, cutting towards the goal off the left wing boards, and knocking the puck towards the far side, where Szmatula grabbed it and pushed it past an outstretched Romeo for his 35thgoal of the season.
The third period only saw Anas light the lamp for what turned out to be the difference maker. After Quenneville beat Roemo from the left wing but clanged the goal post, the Phantoms rushed up the ice, feeding Anas on the right side. He cut in towards Frey and avoided the netminder's pokecheck, and slid the puck five-hole for his 27th goal of the season to ice the game.
The Fighting Saints are now 0-3-1 in its last four home games. Dubuque was 0-for-2 on the powerplay while the Phantoms were 0-for-1.
