Rome Rallies Late, Still Falls to Bowling Green in Series Finale

July 11, 2021 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Rome Emperors News Release

The Rome Braves (32-28) suffered a heartbreaking defeat on Sunday afternoon, losing 5-3 to the Bowling Green Hot Rods (39-21). After the R-Braves scored consecutive runs and tied it in the eighth inning, Bowling Green outscored Rome 3-1 in the final frame to take the series outright.

As has been a trend between the two teams in this week-long series, Bowling Green struck first. The Hot Rods added one run in the top of the second and scored again in the fourth. The R-Braves finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Jesse Franklin V crushed a solo shot to Home Run Hill. His 14th long ball of 2021 made it a one-run difference for Rome. The next score came in the bottom of the eighth, as Cody Milligan ripped a two-out RBI single to drive in Brett Langhorne and tie the game. Unfortunately, Bowling Green produced a two-out rally of their own in the top of the ninth, claiming a 5-2 lead. Although Logan Brown blasted a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth, it was too little, too late, as Rome lost by two runs.

Brown (3-for-4, HR, RBI, R) and Langhorne (3-for-4, 2B, R) led the team with three hits each while Franklin (1-for-4, HR, RBI, R) and Brown went yard in the defeat.

Alan Rangel gave up two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings on six hits and three walks. He recorded five strikeouts. Davis Schwab pitched 1 2/3 innings, striking out two, while Luis Mora pitched 2/3 of an inning before leaving with an apparent injury. Coleman Huntley III was charged with the loss, dropping his season record to 5-2. He allowed three earned runs on two hits and one walk in one inning. Outfielder Garrison Schwartz came in to pitch the final 1/3 inning, walking three batters before tallying an inning-ending strikeout.
