Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Ryder Rolston scored 2:23 into overtime Saturday to give the Waterloo Black Hawks their second 4-3 win in as many nights against the Omaha Lancers at Young Arena.
During three-on-three action leading up to the winning score, Waterloo maintained possession through a line change, with the puck coming to the left wing boards. Ralston worked away from traffic back to the top of the circles; he cut from left to right, lifting a shot back to the top corner and into the net to lock up a four-point weekend.
The Hawks' win came after a third period comeback by the Lancers which included two goals in two-and-a-half minutes. Logan Will went to the top of the crease after Omaha had forced the puck up the wall and into the left corner. Chase Bradley zipped a pass to Will, who lifted it to the net from close range. After that goal at 9:48, the Lancers followed up at 12:18 when a pass from circle-to-circle left Jackson Decker with no one around. Decker beat Logan Stein with a shot to the Hawk netminder's right.
Waterloo had opened the scoring with a first period goal for the first time since October 19th 3:22 into Saturday's game. Ryan Drkulec carried the puck from the left boards to the slot for an initial chance; Patrick Guzzo cashed in on the rebound which Drkulec's shot created, putting the puck between the pipes from a sharp angle below the right faceoff dot.
Omaha tied the game at 8:59 when Christian Berger's tipped shot landed at the top of the crease for a tap in by Ryan Lautenbach.
A four-on-four goal pushed the Black Hawks back to the lead at 14:43. Aaron Bohlinger zipped around a defender and to the front of the net through the left circle. Initially looking as though he would cut across the top of the crease, Bohlinger hesitated and squeezed a shot past Kyle McClellan to the short side.
Near the end of the opening period, Waterloo preserved the lead despite being two men shorthanded for 1:42. The entire second frame followed without additional scoring, despite power play time for both teams.
The Hawks notched the only special teams goal of the night at 1:19 of the third. With Waterloo on a power play and traffic near the net, Luke Bast blasted a shot into the cage from the deep slot.
The Hawks continue their five-game homestand Friday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The first 500 kids in attendance age 4 to 12 will receive this season's free youth hockey jersey, presented by SCHEELS, Christie Door Company, and KWWL.
