September 26, 2002 - NBA G League (G League)
Greenville Groove News Release
Greenville, SC â Wayne "Tree" Rollins, head coach of the NBDL's Greenville Groove, has been named to the ACC 50th Anniversary team. ACC Commissioner John Swofford made the announcement Thursday. The 50-member team was voted on by a 120-member blue-ribbon committee, which was selected by the league's 50th Anniversary Committee. Rollins joins former Tiger Horace Grant as the only Clemson representatives on the team.
ScheerSports, Inc. CEO and Greenville Groove President Carl Scheer said, "We are very proud of Coach Rollins for receiving this honor. We are also excited to have him back here with us in the upstate. His accomplishments while at Clemson speak volumes to his basketball expertise, and we look for a very exciting season with him at the helm of our team."
Rollins played at Clemson from 1974-1977 under Coach Tates Locke and Coach Bill Foster. Rollins was a three-time second-team All-ACC selection while at Clemson. He was also a third-team All-American selection, according to the Associated Press, for the 1976-77 season.
"I'm honored to be considered among the ACC's elite players" said Rollins. "I was simply blessed to able to play in the best college basketball league in the world."
Rollins finished his career at Clemson as the career rebounding leader with 1,311, good enough for fourth in ACC history. He ranks second in ACC history in blocked shots with 450, and first on a per game basis. He is the only Tiger to average a double-double for four straight seasons. Rollins stands as one of only two players in Clemson history to record a triple-double, which he did twice in his career. After posting a 22-6 record in his senior season, Rollins was honored as the first player in any sport to have his Jersey retired at Clemson.
Following his standout career at Clemson, Rollins was taken with the 14th overall pick in the 1977 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He went on to play 11 seasons with the Hawks, and 18 seasons overall in the NBA. Rollins returned to the upstate to join the Greenville Groove in July of 2002 as the head coach.
Rollins will lead the Groove in their quest to defend their 2001-2002 NBDL Title. The Executive Director of the NBDL, Karl Hicks, commented on Coach Rollins' honor, "Coach Rollins enjoyed an illustrious playing career at Clemson University, and we are pleased that the Atlantic Coast Conference is recognizing him in such prestigious fashion."
The Greenville Groove is set to begin their 2002-2003 season by playing host to the Columbus Riverdragons on Friday, November 15 at the BI-LO Center. The game will begin at 7:00 pm. Groove season passes are now available. Call 864.241.3800 for more information or visit www.greenvillegroove.com.
