
Lowgators' Fred House Invited to Atlanta Hawks Training Camp

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (September 26, 2002) â North Charleston Lowgators guard Fred House has been invited to participate in the upcoming Atlanta Hawks Training Camp 2002, it was announced this week by Atlanta Hawks Head Coach Lon Kruger. House, who will reunite with former Lowgators Head Coach and current Hawks Director of Player Development Alex English, will have the opportunity to make the Hawks' roster for the upcoming season.
House, the 2001-02 NBDL Rookie of the Year, helped lead the Lowgators to the NBDL Finals in the league's inaugural season with an NBDL-best 36-20 regular season mark. The 6-foot-5, 185-pound guard/forward started all 56 games for the Lowgators last season and averaged 13.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game (.458 FG%, .744 FT%).
"Fred is a great talent and has a tremendous opportunity with the Hawks," said Lowgators' Head Coach Doug Marty. "He has the size and ability to play at the next level and I wish him well during camp. The Lowgators will definitely be pulling for him."
Earlier this summer, House led the Pro Summer League's Rocky Mountain Revue in steals with 21 in six games for the Memphis Grizzlies. He averaged 3.50 steals per game to outdistance was among the league leaders at 29.8 minutes played per game.
As a senior at Southern Utah ('01), House started all 31 games and led the team in scoring 15 times. He averaged 17.8 points and 5.9 rebounds and ranked fifth in the nation in steals (3.0 spg).
House is one of 18 players that Atlanta Head Coach Lon Kruger will welcome to the start of Training Camp 2002 as the Hawks open preparations for the start of the 2002-03 season on Tuesday, October 1 at Philips Arena. The first session will follow the team's annual Media Day activities (scheduled for 9 â 11 a.m.) on the arena's practice court at 11 a.m.
After the team's first workout, the group will travel to Columbia, S.C. and hold 2½ days of practices at the University of South Carolina. Two-a-day sessions are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday (Oct. 2-3, 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.) with one practice held on Friday before the Hawks return to Atlanta that afternoon.
Among the other free agents coming to Training Camp 2002 include veteran NBA post players Mario Bennett, who played on the Hawks' summer league team and Antonio Harvey, a journeyman who is on his sixth team in nine years. The remaining three players are all rookies: Maurice Carter (LSU, '99), Paul Shirley (Iowa State, '01) and George Williams (Houston, '02).
The North Charleston Lowgators open the 2002-03 NBDL season Friday, November 15, 2002 on the road against the Mobile Revelers at the Mobile Civic Center. The Lowgators home opener is a rematch of last year's NBDL Finals on Sunday, November 17 against the defending champion Greenville Groove at the North Charleston Coliseum.
