Medford Rogues News Release
Wenatchee, WA - The Rogues were unable to gain traction in game three against the AppleSox. Early errors by the Medford infield cost them early, and late runs were not enough to propel them over Wenatchee. The AppleSox were able to hold on to an early lead, beating the Rogues, 3-2.
Wenatchee was able to get on the board early in the first inning. After Ryan Crowe was walked by the Rogues starting pitcher, Max Bethel, he was able to cross the plate after an RBI single by Mitchell Holland. After one inning, the AppleSox led the Rogues, 1-0. Wenatchee's Joey Jansen scored in the third inning after he reached on a leadoff single, making it a 2-0 ballgame. The AppleSox scored again in the fourth inning after Kyle Vanderkin was walked by Bethel and was able to cross the plate by a fielder's choice. After four innings, the AppleSox led the Rogues, 3-0.
Zach Haggett, the starting pitcher for Wenatchee, pitched four perfect innings then gave up a walk in the fifth to Andrew Martinez giving the Rogues their first baserunner. Billy Frederick then hit a double to right center field and Martinez was given the green light to go home. The AppleSox relayed the throw in and Martinez was called out at the plate. The call was that the catcher, Ryan Crowe had the ball and tagged Martinez out. Head Coach Josh Hogan protested the call, saying the catcher did not have the ball and blocked the plate, which is illegal. The catcher must clearly have the ball in order to tag the runner out, and if he does not have the ball, he cannot block the base path. Hogan was ejected by the home plate umpire, Charles Brant.
The Rogues got on the board in the sixth inning when Jimmy Wright hit his first homerun of the season in the leadoff spot, making it a 2-1 game. Brock Pradere was also able to cross the plate after he reached on a single then advanced to second on a stolen base.
Jamie Flynn came in relief for the Rogues in the top of the sixth inning and did not allow anymore Wenatchee runs. He pitched the last 2.2 innings and gave up three hits and struck out three, with no walks and no runs. His last two strikeouts were both with three pitches.
The Rogues loaded the bases in seventh off singles by Chris DeVito and Billy Frederick then a walk by Daniel Patzlaff but were unable to capitalize and left three stranded. Two more runners reached base in the eighth and one in the ninth but were unable to cross the plate. The AppleSox completed a sweep of the Rogues with a game three win, 3-2.
The Rogues head to Kitsap to face the Blue Jackets in another three-game series that starts tomorrow. First pitch on Thursday is at 6:35pm.
