Medford Rogues News Release
MEDFORD, OR - Medford Rogues LHP Jake Lessel struggled early and it cost the game as the Rogues fell 4-3 to the Walla Walla Sweets in the first of a three-game series at Walla Walla. An early Rogues lead evaporated as pitching failed Medford in the early innings.
In the top of the second, 1B Matt Page led off with a walk followed by a single by C Ryan Teel. A sacrifice bunt by CF Quentin Urban moved the runners to second and third, and a balk by Sweets SP J.D. Leckenby scored Page. A single by 2B Jake Whisler scored Teel to make the score 2-0 Medford after 1 Ãâý innings of play.
Lessel started the game and ran into trouble in the third inning, opening with walks to the first three Sweets batters. Sweets 1B Matt Mendenhall then struck out and SS Nick Vilter was hit by a pitch, scoring the first Sweets run. RHP Dillon Keene replaced Lessel and the wheels fell off for the Rogues. A two-run double by DH Renae Martinez gave Walla Walla the lead, and a wild pitch scored Vilter to give the Sweets a 4-2 lead.
In the fifth, Rogues LF A.J. Balta reached on an error and moved around the bases on a wild pitch and stolen base, scoring on a single by Page. Medford loaded the bases on an infield single by Teel but was unable to do further damage and the top of the fifth ended with the Rogues behind 4-3. Keene and RHP Chad Hockin calmed things down for the Rogues as Medford struggled to find base runners throughout the late innings. However, Sweets closer Sean-Luke Brija struck out Balta to end the game.
McIntire and Teel each had two hits for Medford, and Keene ended his night with five strikeouts, in the only highlights for the Rogues. Six Walla Walla batters had hits, led by RF Kramer Lindell's two. Lessel took the loss for Medford and goes to 1-2 on the season. The Rogues fall to 5-11 while the Sweets move to 7-6 on the season. The two teams meet again Saturday at 7:05, where LHP Bret DeRooy goes for Medford while the Sweets counter with LHP Sean Silva.
