Elks battle elements to secure 10-5 victory and 3 game sweep over Kitsap BlueJackets

Bend, OR - The Elks and the BlueJackets were tied at 5 heading to the top of the 9th inning where the Bend Elks drew 5 walks and had 1 hit, scoring 5 runs in the top of the 9th and finishing off the 3 game sweep of Kitsap with a 10-5 victory Friday night.

Rain delayed the start of the game and was an issue throughout the entire 3 hours of baseball, as the first run didn't come until the top of the third inning as Seth Spivey hit a solo home run with 2 outs off of Kitsap starter Spencer Watkins, the first hit of the game for the Elks, to take a 1-0 lead.

Kitsap responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd off of Kevin Hamann as Alex McKeon scored Danny Sheehan with an RBI double and Francisco Torres RBI groundout made the score 2-1 BlueJackets.

Kitsap took a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the 6th when the Elks struck for three runs of their own as Spivey, Chase Fields, and Tyler Servais reached with 3 consecutive singles to load the bases with nobody out. With Dixon at the plate, Spivey and Fields would come around to score on a pair of wild pitches, and after Dixon struck out, Turner Gill had an RBI double to score Servais, giving the Elks a 4-3 lead.

The Blue Jackets scored 1 in the 7th and each team scored 1 in the 8th to send the game to the 9th tied at 5. Cullen O'Dwyer and Landon Cray walked, Keach Ballard had the only hit of the inning, an infield single, to load the bases with none out. After Seth Spivey drew a walk to bring home the go-ahead run, Chase Fields worked a 12 pitch at-bat into a walk to give the Elks a 7-5 lead. Servais followed by drawing a walk of his own, Derek Dixon had an RBI ground out, and Grant Newton hit a sacrifice fly to give the Elks a 10-5 lead. Tanner Ring pitched a scoreless 9th to end the game.

Spivey, Fields, and Turner Gill all had 2 hits in the game, Derek Dixon drove in 2 for the game to extend his West Coast League leading RBI total to 20, and the Elks improved to 11-4 in 2013, including a 7-2 start on the road.
