HAMTRAMCK, MICHIGAN - After surrendering an early tally to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (2-1-0), the Detroit City Football Club (1-1-1) found an equalizer in the second half for a 1-1 draw at Keyworth Stadium on Saturday night.
Along with 20 mph winds, the second half brought more offense for Detroit City after a stagnant first half. After a few strong buildups in the attacking third, Le Rouge drew a penalty kick in the 73' after a Pittsburgh foul in the box. Midfielder Maxi Rodriguez stepped to the spot and finished just inside the left post.
It was a busy first half for goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher, making multiple diving saves to keep the ball out of the City net. He made a spectacular save diving to his right when Riverhounds defender Arturo Ordóñez got a head on a cross in the box.
On the ensuing corner for Pittsburgh, at the 18-minute mark of the first half, Riverhounds' forward Albert Dikwa scored on a rebound right in front of DCFC's net.
Detroit City was outshot 7-1 in the opening half - without any shots on target. That flipped in the second, as Le Rouge outshot Pittsburgh 7-1 in the final 45 minutes.
As the game proceeded, Detroit City continued to press and take advantage in the offensive zone. They had 57% ball possession throughout the game with a passing accuracy of 78%.
The first half didn't have many fouls, but things escalated in the second half with four yellow cards given within a 10-minute period; two for Pittsburgh and two for City. The Riverhounds dominated in the foul column with 21 fouls total compared to nine for DCFC.
Next Saturday, April 2, Le Rouge will be hosting Memphis 901 FC in their third-straight home fixture of the young USL Championship League season. The match starts at Keyworth Stadium at 4 pm on ESPN+.
