Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - LF Starlin Rodriguez worked a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Springfield Cardinals to the 4-3 walk-off win against the Frisco RoughRiders before 5,637 fans at Hammons Field.
The Cardinals (22-23, 55-58) seized the lead early with three runs against RHP Jerad Eickhoff in the bottom of the first inning. CF James Ramsey led off the frame by working a walk to get to first base. 2B Colin Walsh followed with a single to right field, which resulted in an error by the RoughRiders (18-27, 57-58) as RF Joe Benson misfired the ball in to 2B Rougned Odor, enabling Ramsey to score on the miscue. After Walsh swiped second base, 3B Ruben Gotay singled him to third. Gotay was caught stealing and Eickhoff got 1B Xavier Scruggs on a strikeout, but RF Stephen Piscotty extended the inning with a two-out walk. C Cody Stanley then struck with a two-run double to right-center field, plating both Walsh and Piscotty for the 3-0 lead.
Cardinals RHP Seth Blair kept the RoughRiders off the board through his first six innings, including a stretch of 10 straight batters retired from the end of the third through the sixth. However, Frisco got the bats going in the top of the seventh inning. DH Chih-Hsien Chiang opened the inning with a double, followed by a single from C Tomas Telis. Blair then gave way to RHP Kevin Thomas, who was welcomed to the game by an RBI single from CF Ryan Strausborger. Both runners advanced on a fly out to center field, before 3B Guilder Rodriguez drove a base hit to center field. Telis scored from third on the Rodriguez base hit, but CF James Ramsey fired a perfect throw to the plate to retire Strausborger and keep the Cardinals ahead by one run. Thomas then struck out SS Luis Sardinas, quickly concluding the top of the seventh with Springfield ahead, 3-2.
The RoughRiders did even the score in the top of the eighth inning. LHP Danny Miranda started the inning by hitting Odor, before battling back to strike out 1B Brett Nicholas. RF Joe Benson singled Odor to third base, and then Chiang brought him home with an RBI single to tie the game, 3-3.
However, the Cardinals countered in the bottom of the ninth inning against RHP Francisco Mendoza (L, 0-1). Scruggs started the charge with a base hit up the middle. Piscotty then laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Mendoza, who overthrew first base, enabling Scruggs to get to third and Piscotty to reach second base. After the RoughRiders intentionally walked Stanley to load the bases, Rodriguez worked the bases-loaded free pass to lift the Cardinals to the 4-3 walk-off win. LHP Lee Stoppelman (W, 3-1) retired the final out in the top of the ninth, logging the win for Springfield.
