Rodewald Seals Senators Win over Laval in Shootout

Jack Rodewald buried the shootout winner as the Belleville Senators beat the Laval Rocket 3-2 at the Yardmen Arena.

Belleville had goals from Boston Leier and Max Lajoie while Filip Gustavsson made 43 saves. Charlie Lindgren turned aside 30 shots in the Laval net while Chris Terry scored twice in regulation.

Rodewald won the game in the fifth round of the shootout as he beat Lindgren to secure the extra point. The Senators nearly won the game in the shootout as Parker Kelly was denied on a breakaway before Rodewald was stopped moments later by an outstanding glove save to send the game to a skills contest.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the third, the Rocket got two goals from Kelly to send the game to overtime. Kelly grabbed his first of the night with 11:29 to play as he tipped home a Matt Taormina shot from the blue line past Gustavsson before tying the game with 11:33 to play as he snapped a shot off of a faceoff.

Leier grabbed his fourth goal of the year at 12:03 of the first on a lethal wrister from the slot that beat Lindgren top shelf to gives the Senators a 1-0 lead. The Rocket responded, and came closest to finding a tying goal through Nikita Korostelev but he saw his shot ring off the crossbar.

Gustavsson robbed Laval rocket defenceman Johnny Austin with an outstanding glove save early in the second period and Belleville gave him a second goal as Lajoie bagged the first goal of his professional career at 11:34 on a double deflection that hit two Rocket players before beating Lindgren to make it 2-0 Belleville.

The Senators will enter the final stretch of the season next weekend as they play a 3-in-3 to close out its inaugural season where they will face Rochester on Friday. The Sens' final home game of the season is on April 14 against Utica. Tickets are available.
