Rocky Mountain Cup Scenarios: What the Rapids Need to Bring the Cup Home
July 7, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Colorado Rapids News Release
Heading into the second and final leg of the 2022 Rocky Mountain Cup, the Boys in Burgundy need not just one point, but all three to reclaim the title of champions.
In the 18-year history of the Rocky Mountain Cup, the competition has been determined overall points, goal differential, and current ownership.
This year's two-game Rocky Mountain Cup series will be determined by overall points. After drawing 1-1 in their first meeting at DICK'S Sporting Goods Park in April, another tie on Saturday means the sides will breakeven with two points apiece and the current Cup owners will retain the title.
Salt Lake has reclaimed the title by retainment twice in the history of the competition, first in 2008 then again in 2010. After winning the series last year with a 3-1 finale, Colorado's rivals have the opportunity to claim the Cup by default once again this year with a draw.
"The opportunity to win the trophy, it's important to us, it's important to our fans, and we spoke about it briefly today that it has to be important to everyone involved," said head coach Robin Fraser ahead of the matchup. "It's certainly a big game, they're doing well and we're not doing as well as we'd like to be and there's no better way to get back on track than to get a good result against RSL, especially at their place."
There is no room for error for the Rapids on Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium. A win is a must to bring the Cup back to DICK'S Sporting Goods Park.
"Wins like this can go a long way, we can certainly use something like this," said defender Keegan Rosenberry. "Just as important as the way that we perform and the way we go about this game is getting the Cup and getting the result."
The Burgundy Boys can reclaim the hardware by concentration, engagement and clarity of the game plan, says Fraser.
"It's about doing everything we can to be as engaged and focused as possible when we start and if we do, then we give ourselves the best possible chance."
