Cushing Preview: "We Need to Look at Both Sides."
July 7, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New York City FC News Release
New York City Football Club Interim Head Coach Nick Cushing has stressed his side's need to be focused on both sides of the ball this weekend.
The Boys in Blue entertain New England Revolution on Saturday afternoon as they seek to earn a victory at Yankee Stadium. NYCFC have recorded three draws during their last four MLS games, with fine margins the difference between one point and three on several occasions. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Cushing found no issue with his team's attacking output but said they must find a balanced focus on both sides of the ball.
"For us, it's about continuing to work at those areas," he said. "Continuing to get on the training pitch and understand players roles and how we stop conceding these chances because maybe in the run where we didn't concede goals we were relying more on individual ability, - Sean's ability to save the ball. He was putting out some great saves and our central defenders ability to block shots and be in positions. I think for us, it's about continuing to be consistent in the work that we do and making sure that we look at both sides of the game. We want to be an offensive team but we have to consistently be a good defensive team as well."
Elsewhere, Cushing also revealed how pleased he was to get a full week of preparation in ahead of the game on Saturday. NYCFC have contended with a busy schedule of late involving several midweek road games. Now benefitting from six days between games, it facilitated some time off for the players as they seek to rest and recharge ahead of the meeting with the Revs.
"I think you're right it's the first opportunity to get a full week in," he said. "We don't really get a full week because we have to give the players some time off. We gave them two days where they could recharge mentally as well as physically after three games with two days in between two of the games. We got them back in on Wednesday. We've had Wednesday and today training, which gives us an opportunity to work out where we feel the team needs to improve or areas where we can take opportunities when we play the opposition with our style. Tomorrow we'll start to look at preparing for the game the day before."
