Rocks Fall, Snap Seven-Game Home Winning Streak

WILMINGTON, DE – The Salem Avalanche scored twice in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 7-3, Tuesday night at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. The loss snapped a Blue Rocks seven-game home winning streak.

The Salem Avalanche (13-16) scored two runs in the first off losing pitcher Chris Tierney (2-3) as Trevor Mote had an RBI ground out and T.J. Soto hit a sacrifice fly. The Avalanche scored again in the second when Jon Helquist led off with a double and scored on a Mike Rodriguez fielder's choice.

Jared Gothreaux (4-0) pitched six innings for the Avalanche, allowing one run on five hits, walking one, while fanning a season-high 10 batters. The Blue Rocks (19-11) broke through on Gothreaux as Chris Fallon drove home Darren Fenster in the sixth inning. Scott Walter smacked a double, which moved Fallon over to third, but the inning ended on Trey Dyson strikeout.

With the Avalanche leading 2-1 in the seventh, Salem scored four times off pitcher Aric Leclair, behind four hits and two Blue Rocks errors, to put the game out of reach. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double from Helquist.

The Rocks scored twice in the bottom half of the seventh, highlighted by a Ruben Gotay two-run single. The Blue Rocks left the bases loaded to end the inning.

Robbie Morrison pitched one and one-third innings of relief for the Rocks, allowing one hit, with a walk and a strikeout. Barry Armitage pitched a perfect ninth inning for Wilmington.

Brett Caraway finished the night 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Avalanche. Hector Gimenez collected three hits, while Ryan Stegall and Helquist each recorded a multi-hit game. Fenster finished the night with two hits for the Blue Rocks.

BLUE ROCKS NOTES: The Blue Rocks and Avalanche wrap-up their three-game series on Wednesday night as Brian Bass (1-1) takes the ball for the Rocks, being opposed by Salem right-hander Brandon Roberson (2-0). The Blue Rocks are now 10-4 at Frawley, 10-7 when committing an error and 7-6 when the opponent scores first.
