Rocks drop another one-run game in Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem, NC--- The Winston-Salem Warthogs hit two home runs and held on late to defeat the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 4-3, at Ernie Shore Field on Saturday night. The Rocks the first two games of the series and have lost seven of their last 10 overall.

The Warthogs have hit 21 home runs this season against Wilmington pitching, including 14 in five games at Ernie Shore Field.

Tom Collaro broke a 3-3 tie with a solo home run in the sixth inning against losing pitcher Tommy Hottovy (3-9). Hottovy is 1-6 this season in seven road starts for the Blue Rocks.

The 23-year-old allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits. He walked no one, struck out five and left trailing 4-3 after six innings.

The Blue Rocks had a chance to tie the game or go in front in the eighth inning. Wilmington loaded the bases on two hits and a walk against reliever Wes Whisler, but he managed to escape any damage by retiring the next three hitters on pop ups, using only three pitches to do it.

The Rocks scored two runs in the first inning against Ryan Rodriguez to take an early 2-0 advantage. Matt Van Der Bosch reached on an error to open the game and scored on a wild pitch. Chad Spann drove in the second run of the inning with a two-out RBI single.

Hottovy was sharp over the first four innings. He retired four in a row and 10 of 11, entering the fifth inning. In the fifth, Winston-Salem went ahead, 3-2, on a sacrifice fly by Gustavo Molina and a two-out, two-run home run by the leadoff hitter Mike Myers.

Wilmington tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning. Wilmington loaded the bases with only one out, but managed a single run against Rodriguez, who left with the bases loaded and one out

Fernando Hernandez (2-1) entered and allowed the tying run to score on a fielder's choice groundout that allowed Brant Ust to score. Fernandez retired the next hitter and left two runners on base and eventually picked up the win.

Scott Youngbauer collected a two-out single in the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight games.

Ehren Wasserman then retired Ust on a lineout to the first baseman to end the game. Wasserman recorded his team-leading 16th save of the season and his second against the Blue Rocks.

The Rocks and Warthogs conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Luis Mendoza opposes the Chicago White Sox first-round pick of the 2005 June Free Agent Draft, Lance Broadway, who goes to the hill for his second professional start.

Game Notes: Bryan Pritz went hitless in four at-bats on Saturday night and had his 10-game hitting streak snapped.

The Rocks have been involved in three straight one-run games and are now 8-18 on one-run affairs.

Scott White went 0-for-4 with an RBI on Saturday and has five his in his last 47 at-bats.
