Kinston Indians News Release

- One of Those Nights...The Indians made solid contact for the most part against Avalanche starter Josh Muecke last night but couldn't catch any breaks as the left-hander held Kinston to just one hit in Salem's 3-0 win. Muecke has allowed just five hits and no runs in two starts (14.0 innings) against the Indians this year. Kinston's lone hit came on 3B Luis Cotto's excuse-me dribbler that stayed inside the third base line and turned into an infield single when Saul Torres' throw was a half-step late. Salem last recorded a no-hitter August 7th of 2002 when Kip Bouknight blanked Frederick 5-0. The Indians have not been no-hit since August 4th, 1996 when Salem's Luther Hackman did the job in a 4-1 win.

- Star-Gazing...Although both Kinston All-Stars Kevin Kouzmanoff and Jeremy Sowers have been called up to Class AA Akron, the Indians will still be represented at the Carolina League and California Leauge's annual bash Tuesday in Frederick. SS Chris de la Cruz has been named to the squad as a replacement for Lynchburg's Javier Guzman who was promoted to Class AA Altoona, while RHP Nick Pesco will go in place of Sowers. De la Cruz is hitting .242 with no home runs, 15 RBI and five stolen bases for Kinston, while Pesco is 6-7 with a 3.99 ERA. Pesco lost for the fourth time in five starts last night despite turning in his seventh quality start of the year (six innings, two earned runs).

- Double Your Fun...Kinston may not have had much going offensively last night, but the defense was still solid as the middle infield turned a pair of 4-6-3 double-plays to end both the second and eighth innings. The Indians have now turned 72 double-plays this year, third-most in the league behind Myrtle Beach and Potomac. Kinston is also in a three-way tie for second place in the league with a .974 team fielding percentage, trailing only Salem at .975. Individually, David Wallace leads all CL catchers with a .993 fielding percentage, highlighted by 41 assists and only three errors in 428 total chances.
