Rockland Drops Tight One 5-4 to Jackals

(RAMAPO, N.Y.) - The Rockland Boulders fell short Saturday night against the New Jersey Jackals in a tight 5-4 ballgame at Provident Bank Park. The Boulders (18-16) lost their second straight to New Jersey (20-12) as the Jackals picked up their sixth win in a row.

The Jackals opened up the scoring in the first inning thanks to a solo home run to right by Jorge Cortes with two outs. Rockland would quickly answer in the bottom half of the first. With two outs and Matt Nandin on first, Jerod Edmondson walked and Steve Nyisztor followed with a double off the wall in left to score Nandin and Edmondson. The Boulders would leave the inning with a 2-1 edge over New Jersey.

After a scoreless second inning, the Jackals would re-take the lead in the third inning, scoring three runs. Rockland pitcher Greg Terhune allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases for the Jackals with one out. New Jersey's cleanup hitter, Joe Dunigan, then hit a ground ball towards first that potentially could have ended the inning on a double play. However, the ball would skip through the legs of Jerod Edmondson with the Jackals scoring two on the error. Jeremey Barnes added an RBI groundout on a fielder's choice to make it a 4-2 lead for New Jersey.

Rockland would respond in the fifth inning to tie the score at four. Antone DeJesus led off the inning with a solo home run down the right field line. Jackals' starting pitcher, Gabriel Perez would allow the next three batters to reach base to load the bases with no outs. Ryan Stovall then scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Joe Maloney to shallow right field as the Boulders would pull even with New Jersey at four after five innings.

The tie wouldn't last long, however, as New Jersey would pick up a run in the sixth with an RBI single by Yaniel Cabezas knocking in Richard Arias from second. This would end up being the winning run as New Jersey was able to preserve the 5-4 lead for the remainder of the game thanks to three and one-third scoreless innings from their bullpen.

Greg Terhune (1-5) picked up the loss for the Boulders after allowing five runs on seven hits in five and one-third innings pitched. Terhune walked two and did not strike out a batter. Gabriel Perez (4-2) was the winning pitcher for the Jackals. Perez gave up four runs on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings and walked five batters. Salvador Sanchez pitched a scoreless ninth inning for New Jersey to pick up the save; his 12th of the season.

Antone Dejesus went 2-for-5 in the loss with a solo home run and Steve Nyisztor added two hits and a pair of RBIs. The Boulders bullpen pitched well, allowing zero runs in three and two-thirds innings of work. Rockland will look to bounce back and avoid a series sweep on Sunday as they take on the Jackals again at Provident Bank Park at 2:00pm.
