Rockies Rally to Win Second Half Opener
July 29, 2015 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release
On Tuesday night at Lindquist Field, the Grand Junction Rockies found themselves trailing by a run in the ninth inning of the opening game of the second half after leading 5-0, but thanks to a 4-run rally they beat the Ogden Raptors 9-6.
The ninth inning started with a Tyler Nevin strikeout, but the six men after him reached base. Daniel Suero singled, Chris Rabago reached on an error on what could've been a game-ending double play. Jonathan Piron singled home Suero to tie the game, and after Chris Keck was walked intentionally, Bobby Stahel reached on a fielder's choice, allowing the Rockies to regain the lead, with some help from Raptors pitcher Lenix Osuna.
He tried to start what could've been an inning ending double play, but his throw to second was wide left, that allowed Rabago to score, then Mylz Jones singled home Piron and Keck to cap the inning. Daniel Koger retired the side in order in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Suero put the Rockies on top with a 2-out, RBI double in the top of the first inning, and singled home a run in the third, but that wasn't the last they'd get. He scored from third when Piron reached on an error, which got Chris Rabago to third, and he and Piron pulled off a double steal with Keck at the plate to make it 4-0 Rockies, and in the fourth, Nevin singled home Hilliard to put the Rockies up five.
Kyle Freeland made his second start and struck out six in four shutout innings, but the Raptors went to work on the Rockies bullpen. They scored a run off Chad Zurat in the fifth, and Scott De Jong took the Rockies righty deep in the sixth to make it 5-3. Ogden took the lead with a 3-run seventh inning off of Julian Yan and James McMahon, but after the Rockies were kept off the board in the eighth inning, Kelvin Franco worked around a leadoff double in the bottom of the frame to keep the Ogden lead at one. He earned his second win of the season.
The win ends the Rockies 3-game losing skid and gets them to 21-18 on the season. It marks the first time all season that they won a game when trailing after eight innings.
Jones, Stahel and Suero had three hits for the Rockies while Hilliard, Nevin, and Rabago added a pair.
