Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release
The GJ Rockies got a comeback victory to secure the series win against Northern Colorado.
The Owlz struck first. A Brandon Crosby single allowed Kevin Higgins and Zack West to score in the third. The Rockies responded in the fourth with a solo home run from Charles Middleton, which pulled the team within one early on.
Casey Petersen came up to bat in the fifth with one out and hit his second home run in three games to tie it up. Petersen tied Caleb Farmer for the team lead with six long balls.
The Rockies continued to find their bats as Jordan Garr and Caleb Farmer had back-to-back singles. A wild pitch on ball four to Kent Rooklin allowed Garr to score from third, giving the Rockies the lead.
Grand Junction scored two more in the sixth inning as Austin Elder singled to center field, scoring Jack Johnson to score. With the bases loaded, Farmer walked, resulting in Elder scoring.
On the pitching side of things, Alfredo Villa came in after a short start from Jacob Wesselman and had two and two-thirds of solid work on the mound, giving up three hits and recording four strikeouts. Josh Ibarra then came in to get the final out of the seventh inning.
Ibarra had a strong outing as he went one and one-third inning with four strikeouts. Ibarra stated after the game that he knows that he has to get ahead in the count early, or he could potentially get in trouble.
"Throwing first strikes, when I get in trouble, I like to walk a lot of guys, so if I get the first strike, I know I am good. So that is what I did today," Ibarra said.
Not only did Ibarra have a successful day on the mound, but he also got it done at the plate. Before the game Sunday, the pitchers partook in a pitcher's home run derby. Ibarra came out on top amongst all the Rockies pitchers.
"It was so much fun. I probably haven't swung a bat in a year and a half to two years, so to win it was pretty exciting," Ibarra said.
The Rockies and the Owlz will conclude their series tomorrow with a 4th of July game that starts at 4:05 p.m. with fireworks to follow.
