Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Midland RockHounds are a veteran-laden team, with 12 returnees from last year's squad that fell to the Hooks in the playoffs. Monday night, though, two newcomers carried the torch for the visitors, who rallied from a three-run deficit to edge the Hooks 4-3 in the opener of a four-game series.

Third baseman Jeff Baisley, who played last season for Kane County in the Midwest League, slugged a solo home run to the berm in left with one out in the top of the ninth to snap a 3-3 tie and give Midland the winning run. The hit was Baisley's third of the night. In the fifth, his RBI double capped a three-run rally that drew the RockHounds even.

Relief pitcher Andrew Shipman (2-0), who last year played for the Cubs' top two farm clubs, tossed four innings of shutout ball to get the win. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and 12 of 13 for the night. The only blemish on his record was a one-out single by Jonny Ash in the eighth.

The Hooks had built an early 3-0 advantage by scoring twice in the first and once in the second. Shortstop Drew Sutton, named as the Texas League's Player of the Week for the period that ended Sunday, led off the first with a home run into the Corpus Christi bullpen in left-center. Later in the first, Ash scored from second on a Noochie Varner single. Left fielder Ray Sadler opened the second with his fourth homer of the year - a line drive shot that deflected off the screen extending from the left field foul pole.

Varner and Sadler extended their current hitting streaks. Varner has hit safely in nine straight, while Sadler has hits in the last 11 games. First baseman Todd Self failed to get a hit for just the second time this season, effectively ending his hitting streak at 11.

Hooks' starting pitcher Jimmy Barthmaier was placed on the disabled list Monday afternoon. To take his spot on the roster, outfielder Beau Torbert was removed from the inactive list. Torbert, last year's MVP for the Salem Avalanche, has not played this season.

LHP Josh Muecke (0-0, 4.76) will be on the mound for the Hooks in Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. start. He'll be opposed by Midland RHP Michael Rogers (1-0, 0.00).
