Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Wichita Wranglers dropped the Springfield Cardinals in the opening game of an eight-game homes stand on Monday night, winning by a final score of 6-1 at Hammons Field.
While it was St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Juan Encarnacion who was supposed to get the spotlight, it was Wichita starting pitcher Mike Connolly (1-0) who stole the show.
The Wichita left-hander allowed just two hits over six shutout innings, in earning his first win of the year.
Encarnacion, who went 0-3 with a walk, is scheduled to be with Springfield for all eight games in the home stand, as he rehabs his left wrist from off-season surgery.
Cards' starter Chris Lambert also pitched well, allowing one run in his first six innings of work, when Cards' left fielder Sean Danielson lost a fly-ball in the lights, allowing Chris Lubanski to score for a 1-0 Wichita lead in the fourth.
Lambert (0-2) was touched for a solo home run to open the seventh, as Jorge Padilla connected for a solo shot to left field for a 2-0 Wranglers lead. Lambert allowed two more hitters to reach and was chased after a season-best 6 2/3 innings. Cards' reliever Zack Zuercher allowed both inherited runners to score as Wichita opened up a 4-0 lead in the seventh.
Juan Richardson greeted Wichita reliever Juan Cedeno, by hitting his first homer of the year, a solo shot to left field to open the bottom of the seventh inning, putting Springfield on the board at 4-1.
Cedeno would go on to retire the next six hitters, giving way to Greg Atencio in the ninth, who worked a 1-2-3 inning to secure the win. Springfield finished the night with just three hits.
Cards' reliever Brian Stitt allowed two ninth-inning runs, as Wichita rounded out the scoring at 6-1.
The Cards (5-9) send Eric Haberer (1-0) to the mound on Tuesday night against Wichita's Billy Buckner (1-2).
