CORPUS CHRISTI - Alex Valdez knocked a grand slam home run and Arnold Leon and Jason Fernandez combined for eight shutout innings as Midland defeated Corpus Christi 8-4 Saturday at Whataburger Field before 6,016.

The RockHounds stand 24-18 in the second half of Texas League play and have won three straight. Midland is the first-place club in the TL South.

The Hooks slipped to 19-23.

Leon, who struck out four and Fernandez (8-8) covered four innings each and allowed just a single apiece.

Valdez' fourth homer of 2009 bounced off the left-field railing. Corpus Christi starter Kenny Baugh (3-2) almost escaped the sixth-inning jam. Baugh walked two batters and hit another to open the inning, but fanned Josh Donaldson and got Corey Brown to hit into a 3-2 fielder's choice. Valdez then lined his 2-2 offering beyond the reach of Collin DeLome.

Midland scored a pair of unearned runs in the second. Donaldson reached on a two-base error by third baseman Jhon Florentino and scored when Brown doubled to deep center. Brown ultimately reached home as Matt Sulentic bounced into a double play.

Baugh threw 103 pitches in 5 2/3 innings. He permitted six hits, walked three and struck out five.

RockHounds right fielder Chris Carter extended his hitting streak to 23 games in the ninth inning via his 38th double. Matt Spencer drove him home for Midland's final run with another two-bagger off Tyler Lumsden.

The Hooks rallied for four in the ninth against Rocky Roquet and Dewon Day. Ray Sadler dumped a two-run single just inside the right-field line and Florentino rapped a run-scoring single through the left side.

The Hooks' Sergio Perez (8-9) meets Travis Banwart (7-5) Sunday at 6:05. The first 1,500 children 12-and-under get a Hooks Lunch Box, compliments of Mrs Baird's.
