Rockford Lightning News Release
When the Rockford Lightning open their season this Friday in Gary, Indiana, more
than half of the Lightning players will be just a short ride from the city where
they started their basketball careers. Seven of the final 12 players in camp this
week have strong ties to the city of Chicago, where they played their high school or
college basketball careers, and in some cases both.
Ronnie Fields is no stranger to the city of Rockford. This fan-favorite and
Lightning vet played at Farragut High School alongside Kevin Garnett of the
Minnesota Timberwolves. Joining Fields as a veteran player with Chicago ties is
Sidney Holmes. Holmes played his high school career at Brother Rice before moving
over to Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill.
Cordell Henry joins the list of locals to have played in Chicago, where he played at
Whitney Young High School before moving north to Milwaukee to play at Marquette
University with Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat. There is also Lightning veteran John
Jackson who played in the Chicago suburbs at Waukeegan High School and is a former
Harlem Globetrotter.
New to the Lightning camp this year is Kenyon Gamble and Paul McMillan. Originally
from the city of Chicago and a 2000 graduate of Marshall High School, Gamble
finished off his college career at Tuskegee University as one of the nation's
premier shot blockers. McMillan, native of Cincinnati, Ohio, has found a home in
Chicago while playing his college career with Loyola University.
Also new to camp this year is Roger Powell, Jr. who has proven to be no stranger to
basketball fans in Chicago. He was ranked the No. 3 high school prospect in the
Chicago area as a senior for Joliet High School before becoming a starter for the
University of Illinois. He helped the Fighting Illini advance to the National
Championship game last March.
"There is a lot of great basketball talent to come out of the city of Chicago," said
Lightning Head Coach Chris Daleo. "I have a lot of strong ties to the city being a
DePaul alumni and they always come through for me."
Lightning season tickets are in and can be picked up in the Lightning Office until Thursday from 8:30-5:30. The home opener is less than a week away and great seats are still available for this Sunday's game against the Gary Steelheads at the MetroCentre on Sunday, November 20, at 5:05 PM. Season ticket packages are also available by calling the Rockford Lightning front office at 815-874-4232 or by visiting the team website at www.rockfordlightning.com.
