
Mayhem's Darrick Martin Called Up by Toronto Raptors

Boise, ID (November 16, 2005) - Darrick Martin became the second player ever in Continental Basketball Association history to be called up by an NBA team prior to the start of the CBA season today as the Michigan Mayhem player signed on with the Toronto Raptors. He is expected to be in uniform for the Raptors' home game against the Philadelphia 76ers tonight at 7 p.m. (EST).
The only other CBA preseason call-up to the NBA was Larry Sykes of the Rockford Lightning by the Boston Celtics on Nov. 8, 1995.
Martin, five-foot-11, 170 pounds has played 10 seasons in the NBA including time with Minnesota, Vancouver, Sacramento, Dallas, and most recently, the Los Angeles Clippers. He has also played four seasons in the CBA, spending time with Sioux Falls, Yakima and Michigan.
Last season, Martin played 11 games with the L.A. Clippers, where he averaged 3.8 points, 2.5 assists and 17.3 minutes. He also played 30 games with the Michigan Mayhem where he averaged 15.8 points, 7.1 assists and shot .917 from the free-throw line. For his efforts, he was named a 2005 CBA All-Star.
"We are pleased to welcome Darrick to our team," expressed Raptors General Manager Rob Babcock. "He gives us insurance at the point guard position and will help develop our younger players."
The UCLA grad owns career averages of 7.8 points, 3.2 assists and 11.9 minutes in 426 games. In 23 playoff games, he has averaged 4.0 points, 1.8 assists and 12.6 minutes. He netted a career-best 38 points December 30, 1996 versus Utah as a member of the Clippers. While with the Timberwolves, Martin recorded a personal best of 13 assists January 19, 1996 versus San Antonio. He enjoyed his best offensive season during the 1996-97 campaign when he averaged 10.9 points and 4.1 assists in 82 games.
For his CBA career, Martin has appeared in 114 games averaging 18.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and dishing out 840 assists with 153 steals.
The former Harlem Globetrotter was named MVP of the 2003 CBA playoffs, leading the Yakima Sun Kings to a league championship. The call-up is Martin's fifth of his career and the second in Mayhem franchise history, the first being Martin last season. Last season the CBA had 14 players called up by NBA teams.
