Rochette's Late Goal Lifts Remparts Past Eagles
January 14, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME
- Théo Rochette's second goal of the night came with seven seconds left to gave the Quebec Remparts a 3-2 win.
- Samuel Johnson led the Eagles attack with a goal & an assist, Charles Boutin also scored, while Cam Squires had two assists.
- Nicolas Ruccia shone in nets for the Eagles, stopping 39 of 42 shots. William Rousseau stopped 15 of 17 in the win for Quebec.
- The Eagles honoured former captain Jérémy Langlois with a video tribute at the first media break during the first intermission.
Special teams were a big factor in the opening period, as the Eagles found themselves on a five on three power play before the game was a minute old. Quebec almost killed off the balance of the penalty, but with nine seconds left Charles Boutin finished a passing to play to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Cape Breton couldn't capitalize on a third power play, and when the home team went to the penalty box, Rochette found the back of the net with a man advantage marker to knot the score at 1. Just 30 seconds later Justin Robidas scored the first even strength tally of the game and the Remparts led 2-1 following the opening 20 minutes.
Much like the Remparts were in penalty trouble earlier in the first period, the Eagles were dodging the bullet early in the second period. Trevor Thurston was given an early minor for obstruction, and was back in the box for a double minor moments later. The Eagles killed the first two minutes, and during the second minor, James Malatesta took his own penalty. When it turned to an Eagles power play, Johnson ripped the tying goal at the 9:24 mark of the middle stanza.
The game remained at a standstill for the balance of the middle stanza and almost the entirety of the third period. In the final seconds of the period, Pier-Olivier Roy drove the right side of the net, was denied by Ruccia, but Rochette was there to put home the winning goal.
Immediately following the goal, Eagles coach Jon Goyens called a timeout and lifted Ruccia for an extra attacker. The Eagles won the centre ice faceoff but iced the puck trying to gain the Quebec zone, clinching the game for the Remparts.
