FOR WHAT IT'S WERTH: The Rochester Red Wings tonight open a 4-game series and homestand against International League North Division rival Syracuse (Chiefs). The Red Wings return home from a 4-4 roadtrip, winning 3 of 4 at Norfolk (Orioles) and losing 3 of 4 at Durham (Rays). After the brief homestand it's back on the road for a pair of 4-game series at Columbus (Indians) and Toledo (Tigers).

a All 4 games of this series vs. Syracuse will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Sports (TWCS).

a These 4 contests against the Chiefs are the Red Wings' only home games in a 20-game stretch from July 16-August 5.

ROSTER NEWS: Following last night's Twins' game at the Chicago White Sox, first baseman Chris Parmelee was optioned to Triple-A Rochester. The move was made to accommodate Justin Morneau, who returned from the Paternity List. Parmelee appeared in 2 games (one start) during his 3rd stint with Minnesota, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

a Right-handed reliever Brendan Wise today was placed on the 7-Day Disabled List, retroactive to Saturday, with a fractured right hand. Taking his place on the roster is righthander Eric Hurley, who was signed by the Twins as a minor-league free agent on Sunday. Hurley went 7-8 with a 5.81 ERA in 18 starts this season with Triple-A Salt Lake (Angels).

CAN'T LIE ABOUT JULY: Despite losing 3 of 4 games in the recently-completed series at Durham, the Red Wings remain a league-best 14-7 in July. The Top 5 teams during the month:

a By losing 3 of 4 games at Durham, including the last 2 to close out the series, the Red Wings lost their first series since dropping 3 of 4 at Lehigh Valley (Phillies) June 26-29. Rochester has also lost 2 straight games for the first time since losing 3 in a row June 28-30.

a The Wings are 4-4 in their last 8 games, but have still won 8 of 12 since the All-Star Break.

I WOULD WALK 500 MILES: At 51-52, the Red Wings are below .500 for the first time since being 48-49 after a 6-2 win at Norfolk on July 17.

a Since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28, the Red Wings are 31-22.

a Going back further, Rochester is 37-29 beginning May 15. The Wings are also 42-36 beginning May 3, playing better than .500 baseball for more than half the season.

SERIES BUSINESS: By losing 6 of 8 games against Durham, the Red Wings lost their 2nd season series in 5 tries. The Red Wings lost 5 of 8 against Gwinnett (Braves) for their other season series loss. Rochester's 3 series wins came against Norfolk (6-2), Louisville (6-2), and Charlotte (5-3). The Wings had only one season series victory in all of 2011, going 5-3 against Louisville. They had none in 2010.

UNLUCKY SEVEN: The Red Wings have lost 7 in a row against Syracuse, their longest current losing streak against any opponent in the IL. It also marks the longest losing streak against an IL opponent since a 10-gamer against Columbus June 22, 2010 - August 15, 2011 (first game of doubleheader).

a This is the Red Wings' first losing streak of 7 or more games against Syracuse since prior to 1990 (more research needed).

THEY WERE BEING BULLISH: The Red Wings were shut out 4-0 in yesterday's series finale at Durham, but they have still scored 93 runs in 21 games in July for an average of 4.4 runs per game. That's their highest average of any calendar month this season. A breakdown of months:

WHAT COULD BE...: The Red Wings need just one win in their final 8 games of July to guarantee their 2nd straight winning calendar month. Rochester went 15-14 in June for their first winning month since going 17-15 in August 2009. The Wings haven't posted back-to-back winning months since June and July 2007, when they went 16-15 and 18-13, respectively.
