BACK IN ACTION: The Rochester Red Wings tonight return from the All-Star Break with the first game of a 4-game series vs. Toledo (Tigers). Following the weekend set, the Red Wings will hit the road for 8 games, making stops at Norfolk (Orioles) and Durham (Rays). Toledo is making its 2nd and final appearance in Rochester. They played Empire State (Yankees) here May 28-31.
a Tonight's game is being broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Sports (TWCS). Tomorrow's game at 7:05 p.m. will also be on TWCS.
a Toledo is the only team the Red Wings haven't played. The Wings, meanwhile, have completed 3 season series against Charlotte (White Sox), Gwinnett (Braves), and Louisville (Reds).
a Following this 4-game set vs. Toledo, the Red Wings will play just 4 of their next 20 games at Frontier Field through August 5. Rochester will, however, play 18 of its final 29 games along Morrie Silver Way beginning August 6.
ROSTER NEWS: The Minnesota Twins today optioned right-handed pitcher Kyle Waldrop to Rochester. The move was made in order to accommodate righthander Matt Capps, who will be reinstated from the 15-Day Disabled List prior to tomorrow's Twins' game vs. Oakland.
a Waldrop returns for his 2nd stint with the Red Wings. He posted no record, 2 saves, and a 1.26 ERA in 9 appearances from June 3-25 prior to getting recalled by the Twins June 29. Waldrop began the year on the 15-Day DL with a strained right elbow, and he was reinstated and optioned to Rochester June 1.
THINGS ARE LOOKING UP: The Red Wings start the season's unofficial 2nd half with a 43-48 record. With 53 games remaining, they are already just 10 wins shy of matching last year's win total of 53 and 11 short of eclipsing it.
a The Red Wings are off to their best 91-game start since the 2009 club went 44-47. Rochester was 21 games below .500 at 35-56 at this point last year and 27 games below the break-even point at 32-59 at this juncture in 2010.
a With 43 wins, the Red Wings posted their most victories going into the All-Star Break since the 2009 squad had 44.
MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM: The Red Wings are 6-3 in July, joining Gwinnett, Lehigh Valley (Phillies), and Norfolk for the most wins in the International League during the month.
a Rochester is 29-25 beginning May 15 after opening the season 14-23. The Wings are 34-32 beginning May 3, playing slightly better than .500 baseball for more than a 3rd of the season.
a Since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28, the Red Wings are 23-18 to climb to 5 games below .500.
a Prior to a 7-1 loss in the 2nd game of Sunday's doubleheader vs. Lehigh Valley, the Red Wings had won a season-high 4 straight games for the 3rd time. They also won 4 in a row May 3-5 and June 6-9.
HOME IMPROVEMENT: The Red Wings are 31-23 at Frontier Field and are unbeaten in 13 of their 16 series here. That record includes a 4-4 mark as the "road" team against Empire State, which is sharing the downtown ballpark this season as PNC Field in Moosic, PA undergoes renovation. Since losing 2 of their first 5 series at Frontier, the Red Wings have lost just one of their last 11 sets along Morrie Silver Way. They dropped 3 of 4 vs. Durham June 18-21.
PEDRO!: Pedro Florimon was the starting shortstop for the International League All-Stars in their 3-0 loss against the Pacific Coast League All-Stars yesterday in the Triple-A All-Star Game at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field. Florimon, who was the Red Wings' lone representative in the game, struck out in both of his plate appearances and played 5 innings in the field. Pawtucket's Pedro Ciriaco was scheduled to be the starting shortstop, but he was promoted to the Red Sox.
a Florimon hit safely in 7 of his last 8 games leading into the All-Star Break, batting .355 (11-for-31) with 4 doubles and 5 RBI in that time. He has started at shortstop in 59 of the Red Wings' 62 games since his promotion from Double-A New Britain May 7.
PITCHING IN: The Red Wings lead the IL with a 2.81 ERA (24 ER/69.0 IP) in 9 games in July, slightly ahead of Toledo's 2.90 ERA (20 ER/62.0 IP) in 7 games. Rochester pitchers tossed scoreless baseball in 23 of 24 innings during their last 3 games before the break. The lone blemish, however, was a 7-run 2nd inning in the 2nd game of Sunday's doubleheader vs. Lehigh Valley, which led to a 7-1 defeat.
a The Red Wings rank 7th in the IL with a 3.92 ERA overall. They finished last in the league in ERA in both 2010 and 2011.
a The Red Wings' bullpen has a 2.03 ERA (7 ER/31.0 IP) in 9 games in July. Esmerling Vasquez has worked 10.1 straight scoreless innings beginning June 28.
NOT PITCHING IN: The Red Wings offense, meanwhile, has scored a league-low 313 runs, 31 behind the next closest team Louisville, which has 344 runs. The Wings have scored 4 runs or less in 4 straight games and in 12 of 16 games since scoring a season-high 12 runs June 23 vs. Charlotte. They have scored no more than 6 runs in a game in that same period.
THIS DATE IN TWINS HISTORY: In 1996, Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett announces his retirement due to glaucoma in his right eye...in 2001, Jacque Jones, Torii Hunter, and Corey Koskie each hit 2 home runs to tie a major league record for most multi-homer efforts by one team in a game.
