Yankees Walk to 1-0 Victory Over Chiefs

July 12, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Syracuse, NY - It took a season long 14 innings, but with the bases loaded and one out Ramiro Pena proved to be the difference by drawing a five pitch walk to give the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees the 1-0 win over the Syracuse Chiefs on Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Both teams used a combined 12 pitchers in the first game since the three-day All-Star break.

The Chiefs nearly had a great chance to tie the game at 1-1, but Brett Carroll was called out for running out of the baseline as he was hit in the helmet with a throw. After the ball hit Carroll's helmet, the ball went flying into left field allowing Jesus Valdez to go all the way to third. However, Carroll was ruled out and Valdez was sent back to first and the Yankees hung on for the 1-0 victory.

Syracuse had a terrific chance to score in the home half of the 12th, but ran into some severe misfortune. Carlos Rivero led off the inning with a double down the right field line, and was then sacrificed over to third on a bunt down the third baseline by Kohie Hill. However, the Chiefs tried a suicide squeeze that went wrong as Manny Mayorson couldn't get a bat on the bunt attempt and Molina ran down Rivero in between third and home. The bunt mixup cleared the bases and helped the Yankees ensure a 13th inning.

The Yankees best scoring chance of the night came in the top half of the eighth inning. Gustavo Molina led things off with a bloop single to shallow centerfield. Doug Bernier then placed a sacrifice bunt down the first baseline moving Molina to second to give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre its first runner past first base on the night. Chris Dickerson then struck out for the second out of the inning, but Corban Joseph kept the inning alive by drawing a walk. However, Ronnier Mustelier hit a broken bat grounder to shortstop to end the inning and the Yankees hopes in the eighth.

Adam Warren was terrific for the Yankees in just his second start since making his Major League debut it New York. The right-hander tossed seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing just three hits while striking out three and walking two. Jeff Mandel was equally dominant for the Chiefs. The right-hander threw five innings, allowing just one hit. Austin Bibens-Dirkx was credited with the loss for the Chiefs, while Chase Whitley got the win for the Yankees.

Prior to Thursday night's series opener, the Yankees and Chiefs completed a game, which was previously suspended on April 10th. When the game was suspended, the Yankees held a 2-0 lead after four innings of play. Mustelier entered the game in DeWayne Wise's spot and added an RBI single to extend the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to 3-0, where it would stay. Nelson Figueroa was credited with his team leading seventh win of the season, while Cory Wade earned the save. Mitch Atkins suffered the loss, depite tossing a complete game, throwing 151 pitches over the two portions of the ballgame.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Syracuse continue a four game series at Alliance Bank Stadium on Friday night at 7:05. Veteran right-hander Ramon Ortiz (6-3, 2.94) gets the nod for the Yankees, while fellow right-hander Tanner Roark (4-11, 5.11) takes the hill for the Chiefs.
