Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Knighthawks General Manager Regy Thorpe announced today that the team has signed Rochester native Joe Walters to a one-year deal.
"I am very excited to be a part of the Knighthawks. I have been a fan since I was 8 years old," said Walters. "I am excited for the challenge to play a new game. I am playing for the Knighthawks to win another championship."
"The organization is extremely excited to sign a local player of Joe's caliber. We feel Joe will make an immediate impact for us and his athleticism will increase our speed out the front door," said Thorpe. "He's a great young man that has excelled at every level he has played and we expect the same in the indoor game. I feel Joe will be one our best signings of the offseason. He's excited to start proving himself in the indoor game and can't wait to get started."
Walters was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bandits in the second round (18th overall) in the 2006 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. He was later dealt to the Philadelphia Wings, but has focused on the outdoor game. He will make the transition to the indoor game this season.
Walters recently completed his third season with the Major League Lacrosse Rochester Rattlers in 2008 and helped the team win its first league championship. He was also named the MLL Playoff MVP as he led all playoff scorers with 11 points (6+5) in two games. Further, the midfielder was named an All-MLL Team selection as he scored 32 goals with 12 assists in 12 games for the Rattlers, which ranked second on the team in points. With 44 points, he was tied for sixth in the MLL and ranked second among midfielders.
In college, Walters was a four-time All-American at the University of Maryland and the 2006 recipient of the Jack Turnbull Memorial Award as the Attackman of the Year. He was also a candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy, given to the National Player of the Year. In addition, he was the only current college player selected to the 2006 U.S. National Team. Walters played his high school lacrosse locally at Irondequoit.
The Knighthawks will open their 2009 National Lacrosse League Training Camp on Saturday, November 15th from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Rochester Sports Garden (1460 East Henrietta Road). Rochester opens the season on Friday, December 27th with an 8:00 p.m. game at Chicago against the Shamrox. The Knighthawks' home opener is scheduled for Saturday, January 10th against Chicago at 8:05 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena.
