Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - Will Roberts hurled his best outing of the season, holding Potomac to a run over seven innings in a 4-1 win on Thursday night at Five County Stadium. The Carolina Mudcats won three out of four in the series, and improved to 9-11. The loss drops the Nationals to 9-11.
Roberts (1-3) allowed a solo home run to Michael Taylor in the first for a 1-0 Potomac advantage. The right-hander settled in to retire 16 straight before an infield hit by Billy Burns broke up the gem in the sixth. Jeff Johnson pitched the ninth, allowing two singles, for his fourth save.
Nationals' starter Taylor Hill (3-1) took the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits over five innings.
While Roberts was holding down the P-Nats, the Mudcats took the lead. Tyler Naquin led off the first with a deep drive over the right-center wall to tie the score at one. Carolina's center fielder then doubled, and scored on a single by Francisco Lindor for a 2-1 lead in the third.
In the fifth, Justin Toole reached on a fielding error by second baseman Adrian Sanchez. A sacrifice bunt by Zack MacPhee moved him into scoring position for Lindor. The shortstop lined one into left to bring home Toole, and sped to second as the throw went home. Jerrud Sabourin followed with a single to right that brought home Lindor for a 4-1 advantage.
Potomac recorded seven hits over the final four frames, but could not bring a run across home.
Four Mudcats finished with multi-hit efforts. Naquin, Lindor, Sabourin and Jordan Smith had two hits each.
Carolina opens their second road series against the Frederick Keys on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch set for 7 p.m. The Mudcats return home to host the Keys May 3-5. The weekend series features "Friday Night Fireworks" presented by Carolina Ford Dealers on the 3rd, and a Mudcats fishing hat giveaway on Saturday, May 4th.
