Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs News Release
LAST TIME OUT: Colin Murray and David Gandara both netted shorthanded goals but the Rail Yard Dawgs were bested by the Fayetteville Marksmen, 6-3, Thursday night at the Berglund Center. Fayetteville out-shot Roanoke, 44-24 and scored four times in the third period. Mike Moroso also had a goal for Roanoke in the loss.
PACK YOUR BAGS: Friday's game is the first of a stretch of five straight that will take place on the road for the Rail Yard Dawgs. Roanoke has only played one road game to date this season; a 5-4 overtime win over the Macon Mayhem on 10/27. The Dawgs just concluded a stretch of seven straight at home during which they went 2-4-1.
THE OTHER GUYS: The Rail Yard Dawgs meet the Knoxville Ice Bears for the second time this season and the first time on the road. It will be Knoxville's first game since falling to the Rail Yard Dawgs in overtime, 4-3, on Saturday in Roanoke . The Ice Bears are 1-2-1 in their last four games and currently sit in sixth place in the league.
CREAM OF THE CROP: Steve Mele recorded seven assists in the Dawgs two overtime wins last week and for his efforts was named the SPHL's player of the week. Mele set a franchise record with five assists in last Thursday's 6-5 win over Macon and assisted on seven straight goals from Thursday to Saturday. His player of the week honor was the first of the season for Roanoke.
SHAKY FINISH: Fayetteville scored four goals in the third period of Roanoke's 6-3 loss on Thursday, the most goals that the Dawgs have allowed in a single period this season. Six goals against also represented a season-high.
POWERED DOWN: The Rail Yard Dawgs went 0-for-5 on the power play on Thursday, snapping a streak of seven straight games with a power play goal. Fayetteville is the only team that has held the Dawgs without a man-advantage tally as the Marksmen went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill in the season opener on 10/20 as well. Roanoke's 21.6% success rate on the power play is still the third best in the SPHL.
STAY HOT: Mitchell Mueller recorded an assist on Thursday and now has points in each of his last five games. He has scored two goals and handed out three assists during the point streak. David Gandara scored shorthanded in the third period and now has four goals over his last three games.
UP NEXT: Roanoke will complete its stretch of three games in three different cities in three days on Saturday against the Fayetteville Marksmen. Puck drop at Fayetteville's Crown Coliseum is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
