Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Edinburg - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings led 5-4 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Edinburg Roadrunners loaded the bases with one out and Robert Matlock hit a walk-off double to beat the WhiteWings 6-5 tonight at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The WhiteWings (10-12) got the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth against Austin Bridges (2-1). Rico Santana picked up a pinch-hit single and Ryan Kottke pinch-ran. Casey Allen laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Kottke to second. He then moved to third on a groundout. After an intentional walk of Agustin Septimo, Stephen Ward hit a blooper beyond first that Carlos Hereaud dropped while attempting a sliding catch to allow Kottke to score.

Juan Diaz (3-1) pitched perfect seventh and eighth innings, but ran into trouble against the Roadrunners (10-12) in the ninth. Osiel Flores walked and Angel Reyes reached on a bunt single. Cameron McGuire struck out swinging, but a double-steal put the winning run in scoring position. After an intentional walk to Amado German, the WhiteWings went to Julio Santana who gave up the double to Matlock to end the game.

With two outs in the first, the WhiteWings got on the board against Eric Montoya. Jonathan Poterson and Brian Nichols hit single and Alberto Cruz drew a four-pitch walk. Welinson Baez walked to force in Poterson, making it 1-0.

The WhiteWings loaded the bases with nobody out in the third after Nichols singled, Cruz walked and Baez singled. Kenny Hart grounded into a fielder's choice to score Nichols, making it 2-0.

In the fourth, Justin Holloway led off with a double and Septimo reached on a bunt single and stole second. One out later, Poterson hit a two-run single to make it 4-0.

Sendy Vasquez retired the first nine Roadrunners he faced, but Matlock led off the bottom of the fourth with an infield-single. One out later, Vincent Blue singled and Hereaud walked to load the bases. Bryon Smith grounded out to first base to score Matlock, making it 4-1.

The Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Amado German singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Matlock hit a grounder to shortstop, but Septimo, playing there for the first time this season after Joaquin Rodriguez left the game in the top of the first with an apparent injury, threw the ball into the Roadrunners dugout, allowing German to score and Matlock to go to second. Eric Gonzalez then walked and Vincent Blue hit an RBI-single, sending Gonzalez to third, from where he scored on a passed ball.

The WhiteWings play game three of this four-game series against the Roadrunners tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Right-hander Juan Peralta (0-1) will face right-hander Tim Haines (2-1).
