Broncos win in extra innings

Laredo, Texas--- The San Angelo Colts (14-7) dropped their first extra inning ballgame of the year falling in the bottom of the tenth inning to the Laredo Broncos (7-14),with a score of 5-4. Despite an illegal substitution in the bottom of the ninth which prolonged the contest, the Broncos managed a sacrifice fly in extra innings adding their seventh win of the season.

San Angelo reached the scoreboard first in the top of the second. The bases were full of Colts as Hunter Jobes lifted a fly ball to centerfield scoring Bryan Frichter, taking a 1-0 lead.

In the following inning, Butch Ballez reached on a throwing error from third baseman Miguel Ortiz. Jason Diaz earned a walk pushing Ballez to second. Gaines scorched a single to left field as Ballez touched homeplate and the Colts led by two. Frichter singled loading the bases for Jason Landreth. Landreth Connected on a deep fly ball bringing in Diaz on a sacrifice fly and the Colts led by three.

In the Bottom of the eighth inning Brian Henschel returned for his eighth inning of work. Through seven innings Henschel had just allowed one. OJ Garza led off with a hit, then stole second. Luis Ugueto singled to right which drove home Garza and the Colts lead was just two. Mario Mendez also singled putting runners on the corners. Argelis Nunez then singled, scoring Ugueto and once again putting runners on the corners. Henschel was lifted for Chase Vacek. With one out and the Colts leading 4-3, Luany Sanchez lifted a fly ball to Centerfield. Bradley Goldsmith made the catch and came up firing. Attempting to tag from third base was Mendez. As the Colts catcher Hank Lanto blocked home plate, Mendez was gunned down as San Angelo turned the double play to get out of the inning and preserve the one run lead.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Vacek returned to the mound with a chance to earn the save as the Colts clung to a one run lead. With two outs and a runner on first base, OJ Garza hit a ground ball to Nick Mahin. Unable to field it cleanly, Garza reached first safely and pinch runner Nathan Crawford came into score tying the game at four. Mahin was charged with an error. Ugueto then singled as runners stood on first and second. Jaime Morales was inserted into the lineup to pinch hit for Miguel Ortiz. Morales sent a shallow fly ball to right field. Jobes made a diving attempt at it, the ball touched down on the grass as Garza touched home as the winning run. The Colts coaching staff recognized that Morales was not on the lineup card, advising home plate umpire Brian Childe of the situation. Due to an illegal substitution Morales was called out and the game resumed tied at four.

In the bottom of the tenth inning, left hander Doug Brandt replaced Vacek on the mound. The leadoff batter of the inning, Mario Mendez, was hit by a pitch in the right foot. A few pitches later Mendez stole second base. Nunez grounded to second base moving Mendez to third. San Angelo intentionally walked Sanchez to set up the double play. Robert Moron connected on a deep fly ball to centerfield, Mendez would come into score on a game winning sacrifice fly.

Doug Brandt (0-2) earned the loss. The winning pitcher was Tristan Crawford. Brian Henschel earned his first no decision of the season going seven and 1/3 innings allowing three runs, while striking out three.

The Colts collected four runs on ten hits. Bryan Frichter had three singles, including a stolen base and a run scored. Butch Ballez had another multiple hit game adding two singles. Jason Landreth and Hunter jobes both added RBI's by way of sacrifice flys.
