Roadrunners split series with comeback win

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS ---- The Edinburg Roadrunners scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the San Angelo Colts 6-5 Monday night at Foster Field. The win helps the Roadrunners split the four-game series with the Colts who have not lost a home series all year.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Jason Diaz walked with the bases loaded against Tim Haines which allowed Butch Ballez to score for a 1-0 lead.

Osiel Flores led off the top of the sixth inning with a walk then moved to second on a Nick Aranda single to left field followed by Wilmer Pino who reached on an error by Colt's pitcher Andrew Coffey which loaded the bases. Robert Matlock then hit an RBI single to center field that drove in Flores from third and a throwing error from center fielder Hunter Jobes allowed Aranda to score as well. Carlos Hereaud then hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Pino to score which gave the Roadrunners a 3-1 advantage.

Jason Landreth hit his 13th home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning that made it a 3-2 game.

The Colts (36-16) tied things up in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI walk to Josh Collazo that allowed Cody Pride to touch home plate that made it 3-3.

In the bottom of the eighth a two out RBI single by Ronnie Gaines allowed Ballez to score from second that broke the three all score. Gaines moved to second on a wild pitch from Brian Martin (2-2) then came into score on an RBI single by Bryan Frichter that made it a 5-3 game in favor of San Angelo.

Edinburg (25-27) loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning against closer Chase Vacek (2-1) with a walk and two singles. Aranda then hit a ground ball to third base but the throw to home plate was wild that allowed Vincent Blue to score. Wilmer Pino then singled to right center field that drove in Flores from third to tie things up at five and Matlock followed with another RBI single to center field that allowed Aranda to touch home plate for a 6-5 Edinburg lead.

Kelly Casares pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save of the season.

The Roadrunners host the Amarillo Dillas on Tuesday night at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first game of an eight-game home stand. Eric Montoya (3-1) is expected to face Dustin Taylor (2-5) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
