Broncos' Martinez shuts down Thunder

August 3, 2009-Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos offense was backed by a great pitching performance by Gregorio Martinez, as they beat the Coastal Bend Thunder by a score of 9-3 at Veterans Field, on Monday.

The Thunder started the scoring in the second inning. Chris Lewis hit a two run home run, his third of the season. That gave Coastal Bend the early 2-0 lead.

The Broncos answered in their half of the second. Argelis Nunez led off with a double, and then went to third on a single by Luany Sanchez. After an out, Alejandro Martinez drew a walk to load the bases. Jaime Morales then stepped up with two outs, and delivered a two run single with Nunez and Sanchez scoring. On the throw Martinez moved to third and Morales advanced to second. Luis Ugueto followed with a two runs single, to give Laredo the 4-2.

The Broncos added to their lead in the third. Mario Mendez reached on a drop third strike with one away. Mendez then stole second and went to third when the throw by the catcher Kevin Butler went into centerfield. Argelis Nunez followed with a sacrifice fly which scored Mendez. Nunez then scored on a double by Andres Santos. The score was now 6-2.

Laredo extended their lead in the fifth. Mario Mendez singled with one out, and then went to second on a groundout. Luany Sanchez then reached on a throwing error by shortstop Amadeo Zazueta, which allowed Mendez to score. That made the score 7-2.

The Broncos blew the game open in the seventh. Luis Ugueto walked to start the inning. Then with two outs, Argelis Nunez hit a two run homer, his 10th of the season. That gave Laredo the a 7 run lead.

Gregorio Martinez, the Broncos starter came out to start the ninth inning looking for his first complete game of the season. The Thunder scored a run in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Broncos picked up the victory by the score of 9-3.

Martinez went the full nine innings giving up three runs on nine hits. He walked three batters and struck out five, as he picked up his fourth victory of the season.

The Broncos scored 9 runs on 10 hits and had 0 errors while the Thunder scored 2 runs on 8 hits and had 2 errors.
