
Roadrunners Return Favor, Beat 'Wings

EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners returned the favor to the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings with a five-run inning to defeat them 8-1 Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Tied at one in the bottom of the fourth, Edinburg (35-21) scored five runs on five hits as they batted around in the bottom of the fourth to give them the lead for good.
The WhiteWings (31-24) struck in the top of the second against Miguel Martinez. Romulo Ruiz led the inning with a single and then moved to third on a single by Mario Mercedes. Luis Sumoza then followed with a sacrifice fly giving RGV the 1-0 lead.
Edinburg responded in the bottom of the third as Stantrel Smith hit an RBI single to right field scoring Osiel Flores from second tying the game at one.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Roadrunners batted around against RGV starter Luis Chirinos. Cristobal Santana got the scoring started in the inning with an RBI single that scored Carlos Hereaud. After a single by Osiel Flores, loaded the bases, Tim Battle drove in a run with an RBI walk that scored Felix Molina. Stantrel Smith then cleared the bases with a three-run double giving Edinburg the 6-1 lead.
The Roadrunners added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single by Molina that pushed the lead to 8-1.
Martinez (7-3) picked up his seventh win of the season after allowing one run on four hits and four strike outs. The win puts Martinez in a tie for the league-lead.
Ryan Smith, Robert Roth, and Paul Koss combined for three shutout innings of relief giving Edinburg the 8-1 victory.
The Roadrunners begin a four-game series with the second place Ft. Worth Cats starting Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Edinburg leads the Cats by two and one-half games in the standings.
