San Angelo Colts News Release
Fort Worth, Texas --- The Colts were held to one run Sunday afternoon, as they lost both games of a doubleheader to the Fort Worth Cats at LaGrave Field. Fort Worth won game one, 1-0, and then took game two, 3-1.
Game one was a pitchers' duel, as starters Mark Willinsky and James Giulietti kept the offenses at bay through six innings. Willinsky struck out six batters, and Giulietti surrendered just four hits.
The Cats won in walk off fashion with an RBI fielders' choice ground out by catcher Derek Marshall in the bottom of the seventh.
First baseman Jose Ruiz drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on an infield single. A sacrifice bunt put runners in scoring position with only one out. Marshall came up with one out and the bases loaded. He was able to beat out a relay throw from second to prevent a double play, and therefore drive home the winning run.
Guilietti (3-4) earned the win, pitching a complete game shutout. Willinsky (4-4) allowed the lone run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings and took the loss.
San Angelo scored first in game two, but the lead did not last long. Centerfielder Ronnie Gaines hit a leadoff single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Gaines then scored on first baseman Daryl Jones's RBI groundout to the right side.
The Cats took the lead in the second, thanks to a two-run homer by Brandon Jones. It was his league-best 12th home run, and it drove in designated hitter Jose Ruiz. Fort Worth tacked on an insurance run in the sixth with a leadoff homer by second baseman C.J. Beatty. It was Beatty's fifth home run of the season.
Colts' starter Jose Sanchez (1-3) suffered the loss, giving up three runs, two earned, on just two hits in six innings.
Fort Worth starter Casey Russell (1-0) won his first professional start, allowing a run on four hits in six innings. Cats' closer Jeff Jamnik tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his 13th save.
The wins improve Fort Worth to 32-32, while the losses drop San Angelo to 26-30. The Colts return home Monday to begin an eight-game series with the Abilene Prairie Dogs. It will be Haircuts at the Ballpark Night, sponsored by SportClips. Gates open at 6:05 p.m., and first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
The Colts are a member of United League Baseball who are in their 13th season. Tickets are on sale now, and available at the Colts' front office at Foster Field.
