Roadrunners race past WhiteWings

Edinburg - The Edinburg Roadrunners jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and never looked back as they beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 13-1 tonight at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Roadrunners (11-12) got on the board against Juan Peralta (0-2) right away. With one out, Eric Gonzalez doubled and Vincent Blue walked. Carlos Hereaud followed with an RBI-single. Blue stole third, and one batter later, Osiel Flores hit an RBI-single to make it 2-0.

Cameron McGuire led off the bottom of the second with a double. Amado German laid down a sacrifice bunt, but third baseman Welinson Baez threw the ball away, allowing McGuire to score and German to reach. Second baseman Agustin Septimo made a wild throw to the plate, allowing German to move to second. One out later, Gonzalez walked. Blue followed with an RBI-double to score German and move Gonzlaez to third, allowing him to score on a wild pitch. Three batters later, Angel Reyes hit an RBI-single to send Blue home, making it 6-0.

Tim Haines (3-1) retired the first six WhiteWings (10-13) he faced, but in the top of the third, Justin Holloway and Casey Allen led off with singles and moved up on a passed ball, setting up a Septimo sacrifice fly to make it 6-1.

That was it against Haines, who pitched eight innings, scattering six hits while striking out eight and not allowing any walks.

McGuire hit his first home run of the season against WhiteWings reliever Juan Jimenez in the bottom of the third to make it 7-1.

The Roadrunners added a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. Robert Matlock led off with a single, and one out later, Blue singled. Hereaud hit a grounder to short that was thrown away, allowing Matlock to score and Blue to move to third, from where he scored on a Bryon Smith fielder's choice to make it 9-1.

Reyes led off the bottom of the seventh against WhiteWings reliever Todd Lutz with an infield-single and McGuire followed with his second home run of the game. German, Matlock and Eunique Johnson singled to load the bases. Blue hit into an RBI-fielder's choice and Hereaud hit a sacrifice fly to make it 13-1.

The WhiteWings play game four of this four-game series against the Roadrunners tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Left-hander Jorge Lugo (1-0) is expected to face left-hander Miguel Martinez (0-2).
