Harlingen - The Edinburg Roadrunners became the first United League Baseball team to hit five home runs in a game this season to extended their winning streak to 12-straight with a 12-2 win over the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings tonight at Harlingen Field.
Cameron McGuire hit two and Carlos Hereaud, Bryon Smith and Hunter Owen each hit one.
Jose Fragoso (0-1) struck out three batters in the top of the first. In-between the first and second strikeouts, however, the Roadrunners (36-27) scored five runs (four earned). Robert Matlock was hit by a pitch and Hereaud hit his fourth home run of the season. Owen walked and Smith singled. Vincent Blue followed with an RBI-single. After Eric Gonzalez walked, McGuire hit an RBI-infield single to score Smith. The ball got past second baseman Agustin Septimo, allowing Blue to score to make it 5-0.
Matlock led off the second with a single and stole second. One out later, Owen singled and Smith hit his fifth home run of the season to make it 8-0.
McGuire led off the third with a walk to knock out Fragoso. Nick Aranda reached on a fielder's choice against Juan Jimenez and got to second on a wild pitch. One out later, Matlock hit an RBI-double to make it 9-0.
The WhiteWings (28-35) got their first run in the bottom of the third against Miguel Martinez (6-4), who retired the first seven hitters he faced. With one out, Alberto Cruz drew a four-pitch walk and Justin Holloway hit an RBI-double to make it 9-1.
McGuire led off the top of the fifth with his sixth home run of the season to make it 10-1.
Owen led off the top of the sixth with his fifth home run of the season to make it 11-1.
McGuire hit his second home run of the game with two outs in the top of the eighth to make it 12-1.
Santana hit his third home run of the season to leadoff the bottom of the eighth to make it 12-2.
The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play for the final time in the regular season tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Juan Peralta (1-3) is expected to face right-hander Danny Rondon (4-0). Gates open at 6:05.
It's Cap Night, meaning the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free WhiteWings hat, courtesy of Puente Roofing.
It's also Raymondville/Willacy County Community Night, meaning residents of Raymondville and Willacy County can get General Admission tickets for $2 each with upgrades available to reserved grandstand and box seats for $1 and $3 respectively.
