San Angelo Colts News Release
Robstown, Texas--- San Angelo (40-22) battled back to score two runs, with two outs, in the top of the ninth inning to tie the ballgame. The Coastal Bend Thunder duplicated the Colts effort to rally, with two outs, pushing across the winning run and knotting the four game series at one game apiece with a 4-3 victory on thursday night at Fairgrounds Field.
It was a single to right field by leadoff hitter Butch Ballez that jump started the Colts offense in the top of the first inning. A sacrifice bunt by Hunter Jobes promoted Ballez to second base. A single to left field off the bat of Ronnie Gaines drove home the Colts short stop, San Angelo moved ahead by a run.
From there, southpaw's Drew Coffey and former Colt Frank James traded put-outs. At the end of four innings of play, San Angelo continued to lead 1-0.
In the fifth inning, Coastal Bend hoisted a crooked number onto the scoreboard. Three singles, two walks, and a sacrifice fly contributed to a three-run inning. After the completion of five innings, it was 3-1 Thunder advantage.
The Colts entered the top of the ninth inning trailing by two runs. San Angelo's offense needed to collect runs from Thunder closer Benny Cepeda. With one away, Aaron Cone doubled down the right field line. The second out of the inning was made when Nick Mahin grounded out. A Josh Collazo grounder to short stop looked like the game was over; Amadeo Zuzueta fielded and threw it over the head of his first baseman. The ball went out of play, Cone was awarded home plate, Collazo moved to second base. The Colts deficit was cut to a run. Player-Coach Joe Rhomberg extended the two-out rally with a single; Collazo was held at third base. Although Collazo was held, the throw from Center fielder Alex Fernandez went all the way to home plate and between the legs of the catcher. Collazo raced home and the game was tied at three. The half inning concluded with a final out made by Butch Ballez.
The bottom of the ninth inning began in favor of the Colts. Brett Lester managed back-to-back strikeouts to start the inning. A walk to Alfred Joseph and a pinch-hit single by Chris Lewis placed runners at first and second base. A cross-up between Lester and Hank Lanto advanced both runners. With a full count to Michael Lewis, a fly ball was lifted to shallow right center field falling for a single and ending the ballgame. The 4-3 victory by the Thunder tied the four game series at two games apiece.
Brett Lester (4-4) suffered the loss. The win would be awarded to Benny Cepeda (4-3). Colts starter Drew Coffey (2-2) went five innings allowing three runs atop four hits. Jacob Ramos pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning.
San Angelo and Coastal Bend will continue their four game series today at Fairgrounds Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The Kemps pre-game show will begin at 6:50 pm.
